Causes

  • Failed or intermittent window position sensor (potentiometer or Hall sensor)
  • Damaged, corroded or loose connector at the sensor or door module
  • Broken, shorted or open wiring between the sensor and the door/body control module
  • Water ingress or corrosion inside the door harness or sensor
  • Faulty door control module or window motor/regulator causing abnormal sensor readings
  • Software/configuration error or CAN/bus communication issue

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator or message related to door/window on instrument cluster
  • Auto-up/auto-down window functions may be disabled or unreliable
  • Window position readout incorrect or not available (in vehicles with position display)
  • Intermittent or no response from the affected window
  • Related DTCs present for door module, window motor/regulator, or CAN communication

What to check

  • Read stored freeze frame and all related DTCs with a suitable diagnostic tool
  • Confirm which front door (left or right) the code references from scan tool data
  • Visually inspect the door wiring harness, rubber boot at the hinge, and sensor connector for damage, corrosion or water
  • Operate the window while monitoring the sensor signal (live data) to see if it changes smoothly
  • Check for presence of reference voltage, ground and signal at the sensor connector
  • Check continuity and resistance of wiring between the sensor connector and the door/body control module with wiring flexing

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type: typically potentiometer (variable resistor) or Hall-effect position sensor (manufacturer-dependent)
  • Reference voltage: commonly 5 V (verify exact value for the vehicle model with service data)
  • Signal range: typically a voltage that changes smoothly across travel (example ~0.5 V to ~4.5 V) — verify with OEM data
  • Resistance: potentiometer will show changing resistance across travel (manufacturer spec required)
  • Expected behavior: signal should change proportionally and without dropouts when glass is moved; no open/short to supply or ground
  • Data bus: window position may also be communicated to BCM/infotainment via CAN — ensure messages are present

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a diagnostic scanner to read B1189 and any related codes; note which front door is affected and check freeze frame/live data.
  2. With ignition on, observe live data for the front door window position sensor while an assistant slowly moves the glass up and down. Confirm the signal changes smoothly without dropouts or jumps.
  3. Inspect the door wiring, rubber boot, and the sensor connector for corrosion, broken wires, pin damage or water intrusion. Repair any visible damage.
  4. Back-probe the sensor connector (or remove and test per OEM procedure) and verify reference voltage, ground continuity and the signal voltage while moving the glass. Compare to OEM values.
  5. If signal is missing or out of range, test continuity between the sensor connector and the door/body control module connector; flex the harness near the hinge to reproduce any intermittent fault.
  6. If wiring and connectors are good, bench-check or temporarily substitute a known-good sensor (if available) or measure sensor resistance across travel to verify operation.
  7. Inspect window regulator and motor for binding or mechanical issues that may produce abnormal sensor feedback; repair regulator if required.
  8. If sensor and wiring test good, check door control module grounds, power supplies and communications bus. Reprogram or replace module only after confirming wiring/sensor good.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform full function test (including auto-up/auto-down and position reporting) and re-scan to confirm no reoccurrence.

Likely causes

  • Corroded connector or pin(s) in the door harness at the hinge/boot
  • Sensor potentiometer/Hall element worn or contaminated from moisture
  • Broken wire from repeated flexing in the door boot (common at hinge)
  • Failed door control module or poor ground connection
  • Window regulator binding causing inconsistent sensor values

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Front door window position sensor fault detected — signal missing, out of range or inconsistent.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
