Electronic instrument cluster row 1 switch circuit
Causes
- Damaged or broken wiring/harness to instrument cluster row 1 switches
- Poor or corroded connector pins (cluster or switch connector)
- Failed row 1 switch or switch module
- Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the cluster or switch circuit
- Water intrusion or corrosion in switches or connectors
- Faulty instrument cluster input circuit or internal cluster failure
Symptoms
- One or more row 1 switches (first row of controls) do not respond or only respond intermittently
- Switch backlighting or indicator associated with row 1 may not light
- Related functions controlled by row 1 switches do not operate
- Instrument cluster may log multiple related body/cluster communication faults
- Symptoms may change with vibration, temperature or movement of the harness
What to check
- Retrieve fault codes and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scanner; record occurrences and time stamps
- Check for related codes (CAN/LIN communication or other cluster B-codes) and clear then re-scan to reproduce
- Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the instrument cluster and row 1 switch area for corrosion, damage, or signs of water ingress
- Verify battery voltage and ground quality at the cluster (engine off and on)
- Check relevant fuses and relays for continuity and correct rating
- Perform a wiggle test on wiring and connectors while observing scanner live data or watching for code reappearance
Signal parameters
- Battery supply to cluster/switch: ~11–14 V (with engine off/engine running as applicable)
- Reference/pull-up logic supply often ~5 V for switch inputs (vehicle-specific)
- Switch closed continuity: near 0 Ω; switch open: very high/OL
- Ground resistance at cluster:
- CAN bus idle voltages (typical): CAN_H ~2.5–3.5 V, CAN_L ~1.0–1.5 V (differential ≈2.5 V) — verify against manufacturer spec
- LIN bus (if used) idle ~battery voltage or sleep voltage; active pulses per manufacturer spec
Diagnostic algorithm
- Confirm B1206 present; note whether persistent or intermittent. Clear codes and attempt to re-create.
- Check battery voltage and main ground at the instrument cluster; correct any poor battery/ground connections.
- Inspect fuses and relays related to instrument cluster and row 1 switches; replace if suspect.
- Visually inspect and disconnect the instrument cluster and switch connectors; look for bent pins, corrosion, or water damage. Repair or clean connectors as required.
- Using wiring diagrams, identify the row 1 switch circuit wires. Perform continuity and short-to-ground/short-to-voltage tests between switch, connector and cluster pins.

- Damaged or broken wiring/harness to instrument cluster row 1 switches
- Poor or corroded connector pins (cluster or switch connector)
- Failed row 1 switch or switch module
- Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the cluster or switch circuit

- Faulty instrument cluster input circuit or internal cluster failure
Symptoms
- One or more row 1 switches (first row of controls) do not respond or only respond intermittently
- Switch backlighting or indicator associated with row 1 may not light
- Related functions controlled by row 1 switches do not operate

What to check
- Retrieve fault codes and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scanner; record occurrences and time stamps
- Check for related codes (CAN/LIN communication or other cluster B-codes) and clear then re-scan to reproduce
- Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the instrument cluster and row 1 switch area for corrosion, damage, or signs of water ingress
- Verify battery voltage and ground quality at the cluster (engine off and on)
