LAND ROVER B — Body

A front damage check is required

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Actual front-end collision or impact (minor to major)
  • Activation or trigger event recorded by impact/airbag sensors
  • Damaged or corroded wiring or connectors in front sensor circuits
  • Faulty impact/accelerometer sensor or airbag control module
  • Uncleared crash data stored in an SRS/BCM module after repair
  • After-market repairs, panels, or sensors not calibrated

Symptoms

  • Driver information display message: 'A front damage check is required' or similar
  • Illuminated airbag/SRS warning lamp or other dash warnings
  • Possible disabling or limited function of safety systems until inspected
  • Stored crash/impact-related fault codes in SRS, BCM or body modules
  • Visible front-end damage (bumper, grille, radiator support) in some cases

What to check

  • Read and record all DTCs from SRS/BCM/body modules with a JLR-approved diagnostic tool
  • Check vehicle history for recent collision, towing, or repairs
  • Visually inspect front structure, bumper, sensors, airbags and wiring for damage or corrosion
  • Inspect connectors and ground points for tightness and corrosion
  • Confirm battery voltage and charging system to rule out low-voltage false events
  • Check CAN bus communication for errors or dropouts

Signal parameters

  • Crash/impact sensor raw acceleration values (X/Y/Z g-values) or event flags
  • Airbag control module crash event counter and status flags
  • Sensor supply voltage (typically 5 V reference) and ground continuity
  • Seatbelt pretensioner deployment status and SRS event timestamps
  • Related CAN messages (SRS, BCM) and diagnostic trouble code freeze frame data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: follow SRS safety procedures (battery disconnect, wait times) before handling airbag components.
  2. Connect a JLR-compatible diagnostic tool. Read and save all stored and pending codes from SRS, BCM and body modules. Note freeze frame/crash data.
  3. Perform a careful visual inspection of the front-end structure, sensors, harnesses, connectors and grounding points for damage, deformation or corrosion.
  4. Verify connector pin condition and wiring continuity for impact sensors and SRS module. Repair any damaged wiring or connectors.
  5. Measure sensor supply, signal and ground while commanding or simulating normal inputs (compare values to manufacturer specs).
  6. If sensor values are out of range or show evidence of an impact event, replace the affected sensor(s) and any deployed restraint components per manufacturer instructions.
  7. Clear crash data and stored DTCs only after confirming the vehicle is structurally and electrically sound. Some modules require special procedures or a secure erase by dealer-level tools.
  8. Reprogram or calibrate replaced modules/sensors as required by Land Rover procedures (programming may be required for module pairing).
  9. Re-scan all systems and perform a road test where safe and appropriate. Confirm no recurrence of B120D or related codes.
  10. If codes persist with no physical damage found, check module software versions and consider module replacement or dealer-level diagnostics.

Likely causes

  • Front impact sensor (accelerometer/pressure sensor) damaged or out of range
  • Airbag/occupant restraint module has logged a crash event
  • Wiring harness damage behind bumper, radiator support or in front harness
  • Corroded or loose connector at the SRS/impact module or sensor
  • Incomplete previous repair — crash data not cleared or module not programmed
