Causes

  • Open or short in the right‑side device power supply or ground circuit
  • Corroded, damaged or poorly seated connector at the right device
  • Failed right‑side device (motor, actuator, lamp, switch, etc.)
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or module output driver
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay in the circuit
  • Intermittent wiring damage (pinch, chafe) or water ingress

Symptoms

  • Right‑side device does not operate (window, mirror, door lock, lamp, etc.)
  • Intermittent operation or only works in certain positions
  • Related convenience features on the right side disabled
  • Instrument cluster or message center warning about right‑side fault
  • Stored B120E with related network communication errors

What to check

  • Use a diagnostic scan tool to read the full fault list and freeze‑frame data
  • Visually inspect the right‑side device, connector and harness for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Check fuses and relays for the affected circuit
  • Confirm battery voltage at the vehicle (engine off and on)
  • Attempt to operate the device while observing behavior and any related modules
  • Check for other DTCs (CAN/BCM) that may point to communications or BCM failures

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply voltage at device connector: typically ~11–14.5 V (vehicle dependent)
  • Ground continuity from device ground to chassis: low resistance, typically
  • Control signal from BCM: presence/absence of control voltage or PWM when commanded (duty cycle 0–100%)
  • Current draw of device when operating: compare to specification (excessive or zero current indicates short or open)
  • CAN bus: normal CAN H/L voltages (~2.5 V idle) and presence of BCM messages when commanded

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record DTCs, freeze frame and any related network codes with a scan tool.
  2. Identify the exact ‘right electrical device’ and associated wiring/fuse/relay using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the device, connector, and harness at the right side for corrosion, broken wires, pin damage or water entry.
  4. Check/replace the fuse and inspect the relay for the affected circuit.
  5. With connector disconnected, measure supply voltage and ground at the device connector; verify appropriate voltage and good ground. If no voltage, trace back toward fuse/relay/BCM.
  6. Command the device via diagnostic tool while monitoring voltage and current at the connector (watch for PWM or switching from BCM).
  7. Perform a wiggle test of the wiring while commanding the device to reproduce intermittent faults.
  8. Measure resistance of the device (motor or actuator) against specification; if out of range, bench test or substitute a known good device.
  9. If wiring and device are good, inspect BCM outputs for shorted driver or lost comms; check CAN bus messages and module power/ground.
  10. Check for available software updates or calibration notes from manufacturer before replacing a BCM. Replace components only after confirming faulty part.
  11. Clear codes and retest operation to verify repair.

Likely causes

  • Wiring harness damage or corroded connector at the right device
  • Failed right‑side actuator / motor / lamp
  • Poor ground or missing battery voltage at the device
  • Blown fuse for the right‑side circuit
