Causes
- Damaged wiring harness with short to battery (insulation abrasion, pinched cable)
- Failed climate control relay with internal short
- Corroded or bridged connector terminals at relay or HVAC module
- Aftermarket accessory or improper wiring spliced into HVAC power circuit
- Water ingress causing corrosion or conductive path
- Faulty HVAC control module or relay driver output stuck high
Symptoms
- HVAC blower, compressor or vent functions inoperative or intermittent
- HVAC fuse(s) blow repeatedly or are found melted
- Battery drain when ignition off (parasitic draw)
- HVAC warning messages or lamps displayed on dash
- Related electrical functions on same circuit may behave oddly
What to check
- Read and record freeze-frame and any related HVAC/BCM/PCM codes with a scan tool
- Visually inspect relay, relay socket, fuses and nearby wiring for damage, melting or corrosion
- Check fuse(s) protecting HVAC/climate relay circuit for correct rating and continuity
- With ignition off and battery disconnected, inspect connector pins for corrosion, push-out debris or exposed conductors
- Measure battery voltage and note state before tests (use a multimeter)
- Use a wiring diagram to identify relay supply, control and ground circuits before probing
Signal parameters
- Battery voltage (approx. 12.4–12.8 V resting; ~13.5–14.7 V running)
- Relay supply pin expected: battery B+ (constant) on feed side; control/coil pin expected: switched by HVAC module (should not be constant B+ when off)
- Relay coil resistance: manufacturer spec (typical ~50–200 ohms for small relays)
- Control module output voltage: 0 V (ground switching) or switched to ground; should not read continuous B+ when de-energized
- Fuse continuity (ohms)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Safety first: disable HVAC and electronic loads, park vehicle, set parking brake; disconnect battery negative when performing connector repairs.
- Connect scanner, confirm B1294 and any related codes; record freeze-frame and live data for HVAC relay control state.
- Visually inspect relay, socket and harness for heat damage, melted plastic or corrosion. Replace damaged relay and socket if obvious.
- Remove the climate control relay. With ignition off, check continuity between the relay control circuit and battery B+ — there should NOT be direct continuity to B+ on the control/driver circuit.
- With battery connected and ignition ON (or per service manual), backprobe the relay control pin: verify control module is commanding the relay properly (voltage should be as specified — typically pulled to ground to actuate). If the control pin is at constant B+, isolate wiring and connector.
- If control circuit reads B+ with relay removed, trace wiring with wiring diagram; disconnect sections (harness connectors) to find a connector or harness segment where the short disappears.
- Check for parasitic current: remove relay and measure current draw; if draw drops significantly the short is in that circuit. If required, use an amp clamp on the feed to localize.
- If wiring checks good, test/replace HVAC control module or relay driver following manufacturer procedures; reprogram if required.
- After repairs replace any damaged relays, wiring, and fuses; clear codes and perform functional test of HVAC across operating modes and a road test to confirm.
- Note: Use fused test leads and avoid creating new shorts. If unsure, consult wiring diagrams or a dealer-level data source.
Likely causes
- Shorted relay coil or contacts internally
- Chafed wire contacting constant B+ circuit where routed
- Connector terminal melted/corroded creating positive feed to control circuit
- Failed relay driver in HVAC module outputting battery voltage
Fault status
Status
Climate control relay circuit short to battery (B+). The HVAC control module detected the relay supply/control line tied to battery voltage when it should be switched, storing fault B1294.
