Causes

  • Blown or corroded fuse for reverse/lighting circuit
  • Faulty reverse light switch (gear selector/transmission range sensor)
  • Short to an ignition-switched circuit (wiring chafing or pinched harness)
  • Open circuit or high resistance in feed or ground wiring
  • Faulty connector or corroded bulb holder
  • Faulty body control module / lighting module or incorrect programming

Symptoms

  • Reverse (backup) lamp(s) do not illuminate when gear selected to Reverse
  • Reverse lamp(s) stay illuminated when ignition is off or key removed
  • Intermittent reverse lamp operation
  • Battery drain when vehicle is parked
  • Related warning messages or lighting faults displayed on dash

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and any related codes from vehicle scan tool
  • Visually inspect reverse bulbs, sockets, and lamp assemblies for corrosion or damage
  • Check fuses and relays for the reverse/lighting circuits; verify good contacts
  • Inspect wiring harness along route from transmission/switch to rear lamps for damage or chafing
  • Backprobe reverse lamp connector and switch connector to measure voltage and ground
  • Operate transmission into Reverse while watching voltage and lamp behavior

Signal parameters

  • Reverse lamp feed voltage with ignition ON and gear in Reverse: battery nominal ~11.5–14.5 V
  • Reverse lamp feed voltage with ignition ON and gear NOT in Reverse: ~0 V (or low) at lamp feed
  • Ignition-switched supply at related fuse/connector with ignition ON: battery nominal ~11.5–14.5 V
  • Ground at lamp chassis point: close to 0 Ω continuity to battery negative (typically
  • Switch continuity: closed (near 0 Ω) when transmission/sensor in Reverse, open when not

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, read DTC B13D8 and any related codes; record freeze-frame data.
  2. Visually inspect rear lamp assemblies, bulbs, sockets and harness for corrosion, water ingress, or damage; replace bulbs or repair sockets as needed.
  3. Check relevant fuses/relays for the reverse/lighting circuit; replace any blown fuses and re-test.
  4. With a multimeter, backprobe the reverse lamp positive feed and ground at the lamp connector. Have an assistant select Reverse. Confirm battery voltage at the feed only when Reverse is selected (and ignition as required).
  5. If voltage is present when it should not be (ignition off or not in Reverse), isolate sections of harness to locate source of backfeed—disconnect rear lamp connector and inspect upstream connectors for ignition-switched wiring contacting the lamp feed.
  6. Test the reverse light switch (transmission range sensor) for correct operation and wiring continuity; if external switch on transmission, verify physical actuation when selecting Reverse.
  7. Inspect and test ground continuity from lamp ground to chassis/battery negative; repair any high-resistance grounds.
  8. If wiring and switch check good, test or swap the body/lighting control module (or compare with known-good module) or check module outputs with an appropriate scope/scan tool to confirm correct output behavior.
  9. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connectors, switch, or module as indicated. Clear codes, perform functional test (select Reverse repeatedly) and road-test to confirm resolution.
  10. If code persists after repairs, check for software updates or technical service bulletins and consult manufacturer-specific diagnostics.

Likely causes

  • Faulty or misadjusted reverse light switch
  • Damaged or chafed wiring creating a short to an ignition-switched feed
  • Blown fuse or poor fuse/relay connection in the lighting feed
  • Corroded connector or bulb holder causing intermittent connection
  • Parasitic feed from aftermarket accessory

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored when the reverse lamp circuit shows an unexpected ignition-switched supply condition or the expected supply is absent/incorrect. Indicates a wiring, switch, lamp, or control module fault requiring inspection.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
