Causes

  • Open or shorted temperature sensor (thermistor) in rear left seat heater pad
  • Damaged connector or wiring (open, short to ground, short to battery, high resistance)
  • Corrosion or water ingress at seat connector or junctions
  • Poor ground or power supply to seat control module
  • Faulty seat control module / body control module (BCM) or software anomaly
  • Aftermarket seat covers or previous repairs that disturbed the sensor

Symptoms

  • Rear left seat heater does not operate or works intermittently
  • Seat heater indicator for rear left shows error or does not illuminate
  • Warning/message on cluster/infotainment about seat heating fault
  • Stored DTC B141E and possibly related seat heating codes
  • Comfort functions for rear left seat disabled or limited

What to check

  • Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data with an OEM-level scan tool
  • Check for other related seat or body module codes (left/right, other seats)
  • Visual inspection of rear left seat upholstery, connectors under seat, and wiring harness for damage or water
  • Check connector pins for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or bent terminals
  • Verify seat control module power and ground with ignition ON
  • Measure sensor wiring continuity between the sensor connector and the seat module connector

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage to sensor: typically a stable 5 V or 3.3 V supply from seat module (verify with wiring diagram)
  • Thermistor signal voltage: typically varies between ~0.2 V and ~4.8 V depending on temperature and design
  • Typical sensor resistance at ~25°C: commonly in the low kΩ range (example: 2 kΩ–20 kΩ) — consult OEM spec
  • Open-circuit threshold: resistance reading >>100 kΩ or OL; signal voltage near supply or 0V depending on circuit
  • Short-circuit threshold: resistance

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM scanner, read/record B141E and any related codes; view live data for rear left seat temperature sensor.
  2. Confirm symptom: attempt to operate rear left seat heater and observe live sensor voltage/resistance and heater status.
  3. Inspect rear left seat area: upholstery, connectors under seat, visible harness for chafing or water damage.
  4. With ignition ON, verify reference voltage and ground at the seat sensor connector (backprobe) per wiring diagram. Do not short pins.
  5. Disconnect sensor connector and measure resistance of the sensor element at the connector. Compare to OEM spec for ambient temperature. If unavailable, look for a plausible thermistor curve: not OL and not shorted.
  6. If sensor resistance is out of range, replace the seat heating sensor/pad assembly or sensor element per OEM procedure.
  7. If sensor resistance is nominal, check continuity and resistance of wiring between sensor connector and seat control module; repair any opens, shorts or high-resistance joints.
  8. If wiring checks good, test or swap the seat control module (if serviceable) or inspect module connector for corrosion and proper mating. Consider reprogramming/initialisation if required by manufacturer.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a functional test and road/operation test. Re-scan to confirm B141E does not return.
  10. If intermittent and not reproducible, perform extended wiggle/operational testing with the scanner connected while simulating seat movement.

Likely causes

  • Broken/disconnected sensor lead inside the seat (most common)
  • Corroded/loose connector at seat harness (common in vehicles with water ingress)
  • Sensor element failed (open or shorted thermistor)
  • Seat control module failing to read sensor due to internal fault or missing reference voltage
  • Intermittent wiring fault caused by seat movement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Rear left seat heating sensor circuit fault detected (open/short/out-of-range). Seat heating for rear left may be disabled until fault is cleared and repair completed.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
