Causes

  • Damaged or broken wiring in switch harness
  • Corroded or loose connector at the switch or BCM
  • Failed wash/clean switch (mechanical or internal electrical fault)
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the switch/circuit
  • Water ingress or contamination at the switch or connector
  • Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) or internal input circuit

Symptoms

  • Windshield washer/wash switch not working or intermittent operation
  • Washer pump does not activate when switch is operated
  • Intermittent washer operation or only works after manipulating switch/wiring
  • Possible diagnostic trouble lamp or message related to washer/wiper system
  • No corresponding change on scan tool live data when operating switch

What to check

  • Read stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scanner
  • Visually inspect switch, switch connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or water entry
  • Check related fuses and relays for continuity and correct rating
  • Operate the wash switch while observing the connector and wiring for movement/loose connection
  • Scan tool: monitor wash switch input status/command while operating switch
  • Consult vehicle wiring diagrams and pinouts before probing connectors

Signal parameters

  • Key ON battery voltage present at switch supply (approx. 11–14 V)
  • Signal line at BCM input: typically 0 V (ground) or switched 12 V when actuated depending on design — verify against wiring diagram
  • Switch closed resistance: near 0 Ω (low ohms) between switch terminals when pressed; open circuit (OL) when released
  • Connector/ground resistance to chassis:
  • Expected current at switch input is minimal (switch is signal-level); pump current measured at pump circuit (if applicable) will be higher — check against factory values

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze frame data; record any related codes for wiper/washer systems and clear codes.
  2. Verify customer complaint by operating the wash switch and observing symptom; note when fault occurs (consistent/intermittent).
  3. Visually inspect switch assembly, harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, or signs of water ingress. Repair any obvious issues.
  4. Check relevant fuses and relays; replace if blown and retest. If fuse blows repeatedly, stop and investigate cause.
  5. Using a scan tool, monitor the wash switch input/status while an assistant operates the switch. Note whether BCM sees the input change.
  6. Back-probe the switch connector (or disconnect and measure at harness side) with a multimeter: verify supply voltage, signal voltage change and ground continuity when switch is actuated. Compare to vehicle wiring diagram for expected behavior.
  7. Perform a continuity test from the switch signal pin to the BCM connector pin to detect opens/shorts; wiggle the harness for intermittent faults.
  8. If the switch does not show expected continuity or signal change, bench-test or substitute a known-good switch and re-check operation.
  9. If the switch and wiring test good but the BCM does not see the input, inspect BCM connectors/power/grounds and retest continuity to BCM pins. Repair any connector or wiring faults.
  10. If wiring, connectors and switch are confirmed good and the BCM still does not respond, consider BCM fault: consult manufacturer guidance, check for software updates/TSBs and perform BCM replacement or repair only after thorough verification.
  11. Clear codes and confirm repair by repeated operation and scan tool verification; road-test if necessary.

Likely causes

  • Wiring abrasion or break at steering column/under-dash area
  • Corroded connector pins at the switch or BCM
  • Defective switch contacts (sticking or open when actuated)
  • Moisture entry into switch assembly causing intermittent short or open
  • Blown fuse for washer/wiper electronics
  • Less likely: BCM input circuit failure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
B1450 — Wash switch / cleaning circuit failure detected (open/short or signal out of expected range).
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
