Causes

  • Blown fuse or fusible link supplying door locks
  • Open or shorted wiring between the BCM/door module and passenger door actuator
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at the passenger door actuator
  • Failed/passenger door lock actuator motor or internal switch
  • Water intrusion or contamination in the door harness or actuator
  • Mechanical binding or jam in the lock mechanism causing electrical overload

Symptoms

  • Front passenger door will not lock or unlock with key fob, door switch, or automatic lock commands
  • Intermittent locking/unlocking or only locks in one direction
  • Noise (grinding or clicking) from inside the passenger door when commanded
  • Other doors operate normally while passenger door is inoperative
  • Blown fuse or parasitic drain in severe cases
  • Possible entry/anti-theft warnings if the system detects failures

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and any related codes with a scan tool
  • Inspect fuses/relays for the door lock circuit
  • Operate locks with a scan tool and note response, error messages, or current draw
  • Visually inspect passenger door wiring, harness boot at hinge, and connector for corrosion, damage, or water
  • Check for corrosion or bent pins at the actuator connector
  • Listen for actuator noise when commanding lock/unlock

Signal parameters

  • Nominal supply voltage to actuator: ~12 V when commanded (vehicle battery present)
  • Ground reference: 0 V at chassis ground
  • Actuator coil/static resistance (typical): roughly 5–30 ohms (varies by design) — consult vehicle spec
  • Lock/unlock command waveform: direct 12 V/ground or pulse/PWM depending on vehicle (scan tool output/state may be high/low)
  • Current draw when operating: small motor current surge (consult service spec)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify code and related DTCs with a scan tool; clear codes and attempt to re-create fault
  2. Visually inspect door harness, rubber gaiter at hinge, and actuator connector for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  3. Check fuses and relays for the door lock circuit; replace if blown and re-test
  4. Command the front passenger door lock with a scan tool while an assistant observes the door and connector
  5. Backprobe the actuator connector while commanding lock/unlock: verify proper supply voltage and ground switching at the connector
  6. If no voltage change at connector, trace wiring back to BCM/door module; check for open/short to power or ground and continuity to BCM
  7. If correct voltage is present but actuator does not move, disconnect connector and measure actuator resistance; if within spec, bench-test actuator with 12 V (observe correct direction/polarity)
  8. If actuator bench-test fails, replace actuator and re-test operation and code status
  9. If actuator works on bench but fails in-vehicle, inspect harness for intermittent short/open where it flexes at hinge; repair wiring or replace harness as needed
  10. If wiring and actuator are good but no command from BCM/door module, check BCM outputs, grounds, and data bus communications (check for related U-codes). Replace or reprogram BCM only after confirming external components are good
  11. After repair, clear codes, operate locks through multiple cycles, and road-test; verify no return of the code

  • Open or short in the door harness where it flexes at the door hinge
  • Failed actuator motor (wear or water damage)
  • Blown fuse protecting lock circuit
