Causes

  • Open or broken wiring in the left curtain squib circuit
  • Disconnected, corroded or poorly seated squib connector
  • Damaged curtain airbag module (squib)
  • Faulty or damaged SRS (airbag) control unit or internal connector
  • Previous improper repairs (bad crimp, cut wire, or pinched harness)
  • Water ingress or corrosion in connector or wiring harness

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning lamp illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Possible deactivation of left curtain airbag during crash
  • Diagnostic trouble code B1B1A stored in SRS control module
  • No other drivability symptoms (vehicle otherwise runs normally)

What to check

  • Confirm code with a capable scan tool and record freeze-frame / stored data
  • Visual inspection of left roof/headliner area, A-pillar and door frame for damaged harness or connectors
  • Inspect and reseat the curtain airbag connector(s) and check terminals for corrosion or damage
  • Check wiring continuity between squib connector and SRS control unit (with safety precautions)
  • Compare resistance of left curtain squib to manufacturer specification and to the opposite side (if available)
  • Check for related codes that could indicate shared circuit or module issues

Signal parameters

  • Expected squib circuit resistance: refer to manufacturer spec (typical pyrotechnic squib ≈ 1–5 Ω). Open circuit = OL/∞
  • Connector continuity: low ohms between squib pins when disconnected from control unit
  • No high-voltage signals should be present at squib connector during normal diagnostics (do not attempt to fire squib)
  • SRS control unit reports circuit open or out-of-range resistance when running self-check

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. SAFETY FIRST: Disable the battery negative terminal and wait the manufacturer-recommended time (commonly 2–10 minutes) to allow SRS capacitors to discharge. Use proper personal protective equipment.
  2. Use a scan tool to read and record all SRS codes and clear/reset after repairs to confirm resolution.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the left curtain airbag connector, harness routing along the roof and A-pillar, and any splice points for damage, corrosion, or pinched wires.
  4. Disconnect the curtain squib connector (both ends as necessary) and measure resistance across the squib terminals with a digital ohmmeter. Compare to Mitsubishi specification (or to the opposite-side squib). An open reading indicates a broken/open squib or open wiring.
  5. Check continuity between the squib connector and the SRS control unit pins. Repair any open circuits, broken wires, or poor terminal contacts found.
  6. If wiring and connectors are good, replace the curtain airbag module (squib) with a new OEM unit and re-test resistance/continuity.
  7. If squib and harness check good but the code persists, inspect and test the SRS control module connector and harness. Consider module bench testing or replacement only after confirming wiring and squib integrity.
  8. After repair, reconnect battery, clear codes with scan tool, and verify the SRS lamp extinguishes and no new codes return. Road-test per manufacturer procedure if required.

Likely causes

  • Connector at left curtain airbag is loose/corroded
  • Wire chafed or broken where harness passes along roof/headliner or through A-pillar
  • Curtain squib element failed (open)
  • Pins pushed out at connector / poor terminal contact
  • SRS control module fault or internal connector issue (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Left curtain airbag (squib) circuit open. SRS control unit detected no continuity or out-of-range resistance on left curtain squib; airbag warning lamp illuminated. Curtain airbag may be disabled until repaired.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
