Causes

  • Open circuit or very high resistance in the left side squib wiring
  • Corroded/poor/loose connector at the squib or ECU
  • Damaged wiring harness (pinch, chafe, broken conductor) — common at seat or door hinge
  • Faulty left side airbag module (squib element) with high internal resistance
  • Faulty SRS control unit or connector
  • Recent repairs or aftermarket installations (seat, wiring, audio) disturbing the harness

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning lamp illuminated on dash
  • Left side airbag disabled (no deployment) until repaired
  • Diagnostic trouble code B1C28 stored in SRS ECU
  • Possible intermittent warning if connection is intermittent

What to check

  • Read and record DTCs and freeze frame data with an appropriate SRS scan tool
  • Observe SRS lamp behavior (lamp on, flashing, or steady) and any secondary codes
  • Visually inspect left side airbag connector and harness for damage, corrosion, loose pins
  • Check for recent work in seat/door area that could have disturbed wiring
  • Follow SRS safety procedures before any physical testing (battery disconnect and recommended wait time)

Signal parameters

  • Typical squib resistance (manufacturer-specific) — commonly ~1–5 ohms for a healthy squib
  • Resistance indicating 'high' or open: significantly above spec, often >7–10 ohms or infinite (open circuit)
  • No battery voltage should be applied to the squib during measurement; measure resistance only with SRS power disabled
  • Scan tool live data may show open/high status or fault flag rather than conventional voltage/current values

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: disable SRS system per Mitsubishi procedure — disconnect battery negative and wait specified time (commonly ≥2–10 minutes) before touching connectors. Use manufacturer service manual.
  2. Connect OEM-level SRS scan tool. Read and record DTCs, freeze frame, and SRS self-test results.
  3. Visually inspect left side airbag connector (seat or door) and wiring for damage, corrosion, bent pins, or disconnection. Repair any obvious issues.
  4. With SRS power still disabled, disconnect the left side airbag connector and measure squib resistance across its two squib terminals using a digital multimeter. Compare to factory spec. If resistance is very high or OL, squib or wiring open likely.
  5. Check continuity from the squib connector back to the SRS ECU connector to locate opens. Wiggle harness at seat tracks/hinges while monitoring continuity to find intermittent faults.
  6. If resistance is within spec at the airbag connector, measure resistance at the SRS ECU end to isolate harness. Repair or replace damaged wiring/connector as required.
  7. If wiring and connectors test good but resistance remains out of spec, replace the left side airbag module (squib).
  8. After repairs, reconnect everything, restore SRS power, clear codes with scan tool, and perform SRS system check/initialization per service manual.
  9. If code returns after correct repair, suspect SRS control unit fault and consider ECU inspection or replacement following further diagnostics.

Likely causes

  • Open or intermittent connection at the seat/door squib connector
  • Broken conductor in harness where it flexes with the seat or door
  • Corroded terminal(s) at the airbag connector
  • Failed left side airbag module (internal squib resistance increased)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Left side airbag squib circuit: high resistance or open detected. SRS warning light set; left side airbag circuit may be disabled until fault is cleared and repaired.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
