B2881
Wireless Charging Module Fault
Causes
- Electrical fault in wireless charging circuit
- Contamination or foreign object on charging pad
- Poor or corroded ground or power connection
- Communication fault between module and body/ECU
- Blown fuse or protection device
- Software or calibration error in module
Symptoms
- Wireless charging pad does not start or stops unexpectedly
- Charging indicator lamp or dash message for charger fault
- Intermittent charging or reduced charging efficiency
- Device gets warm/hot on the pad
- Multiple related electrical warnings or modules throwing errors
What to check
- Scan vehicle for B2881 and any related codes; record freeze frame and presence of other modules' codes
- Visually inspect wireless charging pad, module, harness, and connectors for damage, contamination, or moisture
- Check relevant fuses and fusible links for continuity
- Verify vehicle battery voltage is within nominal range (12–14.5 V) while testing
- Confirm no foreign metallic object is present on the pad (FOD)
- Check for poor grounds at module and chassis ground points
Signal parameters
- Module supply voltage: typically battery voltage ~12–14.5 V under normal conditions
- Module standby/current draw: low (mA) when idle; abnormally high current may indicate fault
- Ground continuity: near 0 Ω between module ground and chassis
- Pad coil continuity/inductance: consistent with manufacturer specification (open or short is fault)
- Foreign Object Detection (FOD) sensor response: changes when metal object placed/removed
- Communication: CAN or LIN messages present to/from module (check with OEM scan tool for message IDs and data)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect an OEM-calibrated scan tool. Read and record DTC B2881 and any additional codes or freeze frame data.
- Clear codes and attempt to reproduce the fault by placing a compatible device on the pad. Note if code returns and under what conditions.
- Visually inspect pad surface and surrounding area for debris, metal objects, liquid, or damage. Clean pad and retest.
- Inspect wiring harness and connectors for corrosion, damage, pin push-out, or moisture. Repair or secure connections as needed.
- Check relevant fuses for continuity; replace any blown fuses and retest.
- Measure supply voltage and ground at the module connector with key on. Confirm voltage is within expected range and ground is good.
- Check pad coil continuity/inductance per service specification. Replace pad or repair wiring if open/short or out-of-spec.
- Monitor module communication on CAN/LIN bus with a scan tool. If no communication, trace bus wiring and check terminations.
- If hardware and wiring are good but fault persists, check for module firmware updates or known service bulletins; reprogram or reset module if directed by OEM procedures.
- If diagnostic steps isolate the fault to the module (internal fault, repeating faults after good wiring and updated software), replace the wireless charging module and re-initialize/calibrate per manufacturer instructions.
- After repair, erase codes and verify operation through full functional test and road/test area reproduction, ensuring no recurrence.
Likely causes
- Defective wireless charging module (internal electronics failure)
- Open/short in power feed or ground wiring to module
- Loose, corroded, or damaged connector at module or pad
- Foreign metallic object on charging pad triggering FOD
- Water intrusion or contamination in pad or module
- Faulty CAN/LIN communication line or terminated bus
