SRS airbag module fault

Causes

  • Internal airbag control module failure
  • Lost or intermittent communication on vehicle data bus (CAN/k-line)
  • Low or unstable vehicle battery voltage / poor power supply
  • Blown SRS fuse or open circuit in power/ground
  • Corroded/loose connector or damaged wiring (squib, sensor, module harness)
  • Recent crash event or partial deployment not properly cleared

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning light illuminated on dash
  • Airbag system disabled; airbags and pretensioners may not deploy
  • Possible occupant classification / seatbelt warning anomalies
  • Intermittent SRS light or SRS light comes on after driving
  • Failure to pass safety inspection related to airbag system

What to check

  • Read and record all SRS and network codes with an appropriate airbag-capable scan tool
  • Check for related codes (other B-codes, U-codes indicating lost communication)
  • Verify battery voltage with ignition ON/START (should be within specification)
  • Inspect SRS fuses and wiring for open/short and ensure proper grounding
  • Visually inspect SRS module connectors and harnesses (under seats, behind dash) for corrosion or damage
  • Attempt code clear and monitor whether B3061 returns immediately or intermittently

Signal parameters

  • Module supply voltage: expected ~11–14.5 V with ignition ON (manufacturer spec may vary)
  • Module ground: low resistance to chassis ground (near 0 Ω)
  • Squib/airbag circuit resistance: typical low-ohm value when intact (manufacturer-specific; open/infinite indicates open circuit, near 0 Ω indicates short)
  • CAN/Circuit messages: regular SRS module frames present on vehicle CAN bus; communication errors logged when fault present
  • Module wake/current draw: normal quiescent current low; high current can indicate shorted output or internal fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use an SRS-capable scan tool to read all stored/active codes and freeze-frame. Save reports.
  2. Verify vehicle battery state of charge and charging system. Ensure stable supply voltage before testing.
  3. Inspect SRS system fuses and fusible links for continuity.
  4. Visually inspect connectors at SRS module, under-seat harnesses, steering column (clock spring), and impact sensors for corrosion, damage or moisture.
  5. Check for communication faults on the vehicle data bus (scan for U-codes or bus-off conditions).
  6. If permitted by manufacturer procedure, disable battery power per safety procedure (observe manufacturer-specified wait time) and measure squib circuit resistances and continuity to isolate open/short conditions. Do not attempt to fire or bench-test squibs.
  7. Repair any wiring, connector or grounding faults found. Replace damaged harness or connectors as needed.
  8. Reconnect battery, clear codes with scan tool, then perform system readiness checks and SRS self-tests. Re-scan for reappearance of B3061 or related codes.
  9. If B3061 persists and wiring/power/comm tests are good, suspect module internal failure — confirm with manufacturer diagnostic flow and determine if module reprogramming or replacement is required.
  10. If module is replaced, follow vehicle-specific procedures for module programming, configuration, and SRS system initialization. Verify full system operation and clear codes.

Likely causes

  • Internal module electronics or memory fault
  • Poor ground or battery feed to SRS module
  • Damaged connector under seat or at module (corrosion, oil, water)
  • CAN bus node causing communication errors to SRS module
  • Previous deployment not reset or module flagged as non-serviceable

Fault status

⚠️ Status
SRS control module fault detected. Airbag/pretensioner readiness is impaired and the SRS warning lamp is illuminated. Do not ignore — diagnose and repair using correct SRS procedures. System may require module replacement and programming.
