Causes

  • Dead or weak key fob battery
  • Faulty RKE receiver module or integrated BCM receiver
  • Open/shorted wiring between RKE receiver and BCM or antenna
  • Damaged or disconnected antenna/antenna coax
  • Poor ground or low supply voltage to receiver
  • Software or EEPROM fault in BCM

Symptoms

  • Key fob commands (lock/unlock, remote start, panic) do not operate
  • Intermittent operation or reduced effective range of key fob
  • Security/immobilizer warning or unexpected alarm behavior
  • No RF activity seen by diagnostic tool when pressing fob
  • Possible multiple stored RKE faults or BCM communication errors

What to check

  • Verify key fob battery voltage and operation; try a known-good spare fob
  • Scan vehicle for related DTCs in BCM and security modules
  • Inspect fuses and power supply to receiver/BCM; check grounds
  • Visually inspect RKE receiver/antenna wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion
  • Move vehicle away from possible RF interference sources and retest
  • Check for recent aftermarket installs (alarms, remote starters, RF devices)

Signal parameters

  • Typical RF carrier bands: 315 MHz or 433 MHz (vehicle-specific); some regions use 868 MHz
  • Receiver supply: vehicle battery voltage (~9–14 V) with good ground
  • Data output: digital pulses or serial messages from receiver to BCM (0–12 V or logic level depending on module)
  • Expected behavior: short RF burst(s) when fob button pressed; repeated packets while button held
  • If diagnosing with scope: look for repeated packet envelopes and consistent amplitude on antenna feed or receiver data line

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm symptom with operator: which functions fail and whether failure is constant or intermittent.
  2. Test key fob(s): measure battery voltage, swap or use confirmed-good fob to rule out transmitter fault.
  3. Scan for DTCs across BCM, immobilizer, and related modules; record freeze frame if present.
  4. Verify receiver/BCM power and ground at the module connector; check relevant fuses and wiring for continuity.
  5. Inspect antenna and coax or antenna harness for damage and secure connections; repair any corrosion or loose terminals.
  6. Attempt to capture RF activity: use an RF detector/sniffer near antenna/receiver while pressing fob; if no RF is seen from a good fob, suspect receiver input/antenna or severe interference.
  7. Monitor data/communication line from receiver to BCM with scope or diagnostic tool while pressing fob to confirm packet arrival at BCM.
  8. If intermittent, wiggle test wiring/connectors and retest to reproduce fault; check for water intrusion or broken pins.
  9. Check for aftermarket RF sources or accessories; disconnect them and retest.
  10. If wiring and antenna are good and receiver shows no response, replace or reprogram the receiver/BCM per service procedures. Relearn or reprogram keys as required.
  11. After repair, clear DTCs and verify correct operation over time and range; confirm no recurrence.

Likely causes

  • Weak/failed key fob battery or defective key fob
  • Faulty receiver module (separate unit or inside BCM)
  • Damaged antenna or antenna connection
  • Power supply (fuse, wiring, ground) to receiver is open or low
  • Intermittent connector/contact causing intermittent reception

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Remote Keyless Entry Receiver Circuit Fault detected. Check key fob, receiver power/ground, antenna and wiring; may cause loss of remote locking/unlocking and related functions.
