Causes

  • BCM internal hardware failure (logic board, capacitors, solder joints)
  • Corrupted or failed BCM firmware/software
  • Intermittent or low power supply to BCM (battery, ignition feed, fuses)
  • Poor or high-resistance ground to BCM
  • Water/moisture or corrosion inside BCM or connector
  • Faulty or intermittent CAN/LIN bus communication or wiring

Symptoms

  • One or more body systems inoperative or behaving intermittently (lights, wipers, door locks, power windows)
  • Warning lamp or message on instrument cluster related to BCM or modules
  • Erratic operation of convenience features (remote keyless entry, interior lighting)
  • Multiple communication fault codes or loss of CAN/LIN communication to BCM
  • BCM resets or repeated fault codes after clearing

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from all modules; note freeze-frame and occurrence counts
  • Confirm battery voltage stable (12.4–14.6 V) with key on and during cranking
  • Inspect BCM connectors for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress, and ensure a secure connection
  • Check fuses and fusible links powering the BCM and related relays
  • Inspect and clean BCM ground points; measure ground resistance to chassis (should be very low)
  • Check CAN/LIN bus continuity and termination; verify other modules are communicating with scan tool

Signal parameters

  • Battery/ignition supply voltage to BCM (key OFF/ON/START)
  • BCM ground resistance to chassis (ohms)
  • CAN bus active message rate and specific frame IDs seen by scan tool
  • Internal BCM supply rail currents (if available) / wake-up events count
  • Watchdog reset count or internal reset flags from BCM
  • Internal memory or checksum status flags (as reported by diagnostic tool)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable diagnostic scanner and record all BCM and network DTCs, freeze frame, and occurrence history
  2. Confirm the code is current: clear codes, perform a functional cycle (lock/unlock, lights, start) and see whether B3154 returns
  3. Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system; ensure voltage is within specification during tests
  4. Visually inspect BCM and connector for signs of water, corrosion, damage, or loose pins; repair or replace harness/connector as needed
  5. Check and verify all power feeds and fuses to the BCM; measure ignition/switched supply at the module connector
  6. Measure and confirm a good ground at the BCM chassis/ground point; correct any high-resistance ground
  7. Verify CAN/LIN communication: use scan tool to check message flow and use a scope or CAN sniffer if intermittent communication suspected
  8. If power, grounds and bus are good, attempt BCM software/firmware update per OEM procedure; follow reflash and calibration steps if available
  9. If code persists after verification of wiring, power, grounds and successful reflash, consider module repair or replacement following OEM replacement and programming procedures (registering, immobilizer pairing if required)
  10. Check for relevant Technical Service Bulletins and perform any recommended repairs or software fixes
  11. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform full vehicle function checks and road test to confirm resolution

Likely causes

  • Poor battery/ignition power or blown fuse causing BCM rebooting
  • Poor ground or corroded connector at BCM
  • Water intrusion or corrosion in BCM housing or connector
  • Firmware corruption or failed software update
  • Internal component failure inside BCM (requires module repair/replacement)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
BCM internal fault detected — internal hardware/firmware error, watchdog reset, memory or communication failure. Module may report additional internal status bytes or reset counts.
🔴 Repair difficulty: Hard
