ABS Inlet Valve Coil LF Circuit Short To Ground

Causes

  • Damaged wiring insulation contacting chassis ground
  • Corroded or pushed-back connector terminals
  • Shorted coil inside the inlet valve (internal coil short)
  • Faulty ABS hydraulic modulator / valve assembly
  • Faulty ABS control module driver transistor
  • Water intrusion or contamination in connector/harness

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp (and possibly traction/stability lamp) illuminated
  • Reduced or disabled ABS/traction control function
  • Possible ABS pump/motor running continuously or unexpectedly when ABS attempts self-test
  • Brake pedal feel usually unchanged for normal braking (no definitive pedal failure)
  • Stored fault code(s) related to ABS valve or pump circuits

What to check

  • Scan tool: read ABS codes and freeze-frame; note any related C-codes or U/P codes
  • Visual inspection of LF inlet valve harness, connector and routing for abrasion, chafing or corrosion
  • Wiggle test the harness connector while monitoring codes/live data
  • Disconnect LF inlet valve connector and check for continuity to chassis ground (should be open)
  • Measure coil resistance at the valve (with connector disconnected) and compare to specification
  • Backprobe ABS module output pin with scan tool command to actuate valve and observe switching behavior/voltage

Signal parameters

  • Coil resistance (disconnected, across coil terminals): typically a low-ohm value (manufacturer-specific). Expect a finite resistance—common ranges ~5–30 Ω (verify OEM spec).
  • Continuity to ground (disconnected harness): should be open/very high resistance (no continuity).
  • Command signal behavior: ABS module typically pulses the valve driver to ground; backprobe may show pulsed ground switching when commanded from scan tool.
  • Observed voltage at coil feed with ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF): near battery voltage on supply side; on driver side expect switching/pulsing to ground when commanded.
  • If shorted, measured resistance from valve connector to chassis ground will be very low (near 0 Ω).

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all ABS and related codes. Clear codes and attempt to re-run a drive/self-test to confirm repeatability.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the LF inlet valve connector and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, cuts, or pinched sections. Repair any obvious damage.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect the LF inlet valve connector. Measure resistance across the valve coil terminals. Compare to OEM spec. If coil resistance is abnormally low (near 0 Ω), suspect coil short—replace valve/modulator assembly.
  4. With connector disconnected, measure resistance/continuity between each harness conductor and chassis ground. Any low resistance indicates a short to ground in the harness—trace and repair wiring.
  5. If coil resistance is normal and no continuity to ground on harness, backprobe the ABS module output pin. Command the valve ON from a scan tool while monitoring the output for correct pulsed switching to ground and no shorted condition.
  6. If the ABS module output is stuck low or shows a short when commanding with the valve disconnected, suspect internal driver failure in ABS control module—verify with module-level tests per OEM procedure before replacement.
  7. After repairing wiring/connector or replacing valve/module, clear codes and verify repair by forcing the valve (if safe) and performing a test drive/self-test to ensure C1201 does not return.
  8. If intermittent, perform a wiggle/stress test on harness while monitoring live data to reproduce the fault; secure and re-route harness away from contact points as necessary.

Likely causes

  • Wiring harness short to chassis ground at or near LF inlet valve connector
  • Corroded/dirty connector or terminal causing unintended ground path
  • Failed inlet valve coil with internal short
  • Faulty ABS module output stage (less likely than wiring/coil issues)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ABS inlet valve coil (left front) circuit short to ground detected. ABS warning lamp on; ABS/traction control may be disabled until repaired.
