Causes

  • Blown fuse for ABS pump motor power
  • Faulty ABS pump motor
  • Failed pump motor relay or driver
  • Open, shorted, or high-resistance wiring/connectors between module and pump
  • Corroded or poor ground connection
  • Faulty ABS control module (driver output)

Symptoms

  • ABS and/or traction control warning lamp illuminated
  • ABS not available message on dash (vehicle-dependent)
  • Pump does not run when commanded (active test)
  • Unusual brake pedal feel during ABS events or during prolonged braking
  • ABS may not activate during wheel slip, leading to loss of ABS/traction function
  • Possible fuse or relay overheating smell (in severe faults)

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame data and full DTC list with a scan tool; note any related codes
  • Perform visual inspection of pump motor, wiring harness, connectors, and grounds for corrosion, damage, or loose pins
  • Check pump motor fuse and ABS relay for continuity and correct operation
  • Use scan tool to command pump motor (actuator/active test) and observe response
  • With key ON (engine off), measure supply voltage at pump power pin and ground continuity at pump connector
  • Measure motor resistance at connector (with battery disconnected) and compare to vehicle specification where available

Signal parameters

  • Pump power (battery) pin: ~11–14 V with ignition ON (vehicle-specific)
  • Ground continuity: close to 0 Ω from pump ground to chassis ground (vehicle-specific)
  • Pump motor resistance: typically low (a few ohms) — exact spec vehicle-specific
  • Pump motor operating current: several amps when running; can be 5–20 A depending on vehicle (check manufacturer spec)
  • Control output from ABS module: switched 12 V or PWM/ground-switched driver when commanded (verify with oscilloscope/scan tool)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record all ABS/related codes and freeze frame data with a scan tool
  2. Perform visual inspection of pump, connectors, wiring, and grounds for corrosion, damage, or loose terminals
  3. Check ABS pump motor fuse and relay; replace if blown/faulty and retest
  4. With battery connected and ignition ON, measure battery voltage at pump power pin; if low or absent, trace and repair power feed
  5. Command pump motor with scan tool; if pump runs and code clears, retest and monitor for recurrence
  6. If no power at pump pin but fuse/relay OK, test relay coil and control circuit (verify module driver output)
  7. Disconnect pump connector, measure motor resistance to ground (with battery disconnected); if open or infinite, replace or bench-test pump motor
  8. If motor has low resistance but does not run when powered, bench-test motor with a fused 12 V supply to verify operation
  9. If motor draws excessive current or is locked, replace pump assembly
  10. If wiring and pump check OK, suspect ABS control module driver fault; verify module grounds and power, consult manufacturer repair procedures before replacement
  11. After repairs, clear codes, perform ABS system readiness/bleeding if hydraulic work was done, and road test to confirm proper ABS operation
