ABS control module internal fault

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Internal software or firmware corruption (checksum/EEPROM error)
  • Processor or internal hardware failure in the ABS control module
  • Intermittent or low battery/vehicle supply voltage to the module
  • Poor ground or supply connections, blown fuse
  • CAN/LIN network faults or communication interruptions
  • Water intrusion, corrosion or physical damage to the module

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp and/or traction control/wheel slip warning illuminated
  • Loss of ABS functionality (brakes revert to non-ABS operation)
  • Intermittent or persistent fault codes related to ABS or CAN bus
  • Inconsistent brake pedal feel during emergency braking (ABS not available)
  • Possible inability to communicate with ABS module using scan tool

What to check

  • Read ABS module freeze frame and full diagnostic data with a capable scan tool
  • Check battery voltage and charge state; test while cranking and under load
  • Inspect ABS module power and ground connections for tightness and corrosion
  • Verify fuses and relays feeding the ABS module
  • Scan vehicle network for CAN/LIN errors, bus-off conditions, and other module faults
  • Visually inspect module for water damage, corrosion, or physical damage

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply voltage to ABS module (VBATT) — should be within manufacturer spec
  • Module ground integrity (low resistance between module ground and chassis/battery negative)
  • CAN bus messages to/from ABS module (message rate, valid IDs, error frames)
  • Internal self-test/error counters (EEPROM checksum, CRC, watchdog resets)
  • Module uptime/reboot count or last reset reason (if available from scan tool)
  • Firmware/part number and software version reported by the ABS module

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool capable of reading manufacturer-specific ABS data. Record the code, freeze frame, stored events and any related codes.
  2. Clear the code and attempt to reproduce. If the code does not return, monitor for intermittent faults and note conditions.
  3. Verify battery voltage and health. Recharge or replace weak battery and retest. Check for voltage drops during starter cranking.
  4. Inspect and clean all ABS module power and ground connectors. Repair any damaged pins or harness insulation.
  5. Check fuses/relays and measure supply voltage at the module connector with key ON and engine cranking. Compare to specification.
  6. Inspect CAN bus wiring and connectors for continuity, shorts, high resistance and proper termination. Use oscilloscope or CAN tester if available.
  7. Review module status data for EEPROM/CRC/checksum errors, watchdog resets or bootloader messages indicating failed firmware.
  8. If software corruption suspected, check for available TSBs/software updates. Reflash or reprogram module using manufacturer procedure. Ensure correct part/software match.
  9. If module remains unresponsive or internal fault persists after power/communication verification and reflash, consider replacing the ABS control module and program the new unit per manufacturer instructions.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform a test drive to verify ABS and related systems operate normally. Re-scan to confirm no return of C1B0B or related faults.

Likely causes

  • Weak battery or voltage spikes causing module reboot or memory corruption
  • Loose, corroded or damaged power/ground connectors at ABS module
  • Damaged CAN bus wiring, short to ground or missing termination
  • Faulty ABS module internal components (processor, memory)
  • Previous unsuccessful software update or incorrect firmware loaded
  • Environmental contamination (moisture, salt) causing internal shorting

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ABS control module internal fault — internal memory/processor/firmware error or comms failure. Check module power, ground, communication bus and software before replacing module.
