ABS wheel speed sensor circuit fault — right rear

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or shorted wheel speed sensor wiring (right rear)
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at sensor or ABS harness
  • Failed right‑rear wheel speed sensor
  • Damaged, missing or contaminated tone/reluctor ring
  • Excessive wheel bearing play or physical damage near sensor
  • Water/contamination ingress at sensor/connector

Symptoms

  • ABS warning lamp illuminated
  • Traction control or stability control warning (TC/ESC) may be on or disabled
  • ABS/traction functions may engage incorrectly or be unavailable
  • Intermittent or permanent speed signal loss for right‑rear wheel
  • Possible inconsistent ABS activation or pulsation under braking
  • Brake/traction diagnostics may show low or zero wheel speed for right‑rear wheel

What to check

  • Read and record freeze‑frame data and all related ABS codes with a scan tool
  • Visually inspect right‑rear wheel sensor, connector, wiring harness and tone ring for damage, corrosion or contamination
  • Check for water, corrosion or pushed‑out pins at the sensor connector; reseat and inspect pins
  • Observe live wheel speed data while manually rotating wheel (scan tool) — look for missing or erratic RPM/speed for right‑rear
  • Backprobe sensor connector to check reference/ground/signal (if active sensor)
  • Measure sensor resistance/continuity (if applicable) and compare to OEM spec

Signal parameters

  • Passive (magnetic) sensors: generate AC voltage whose amplitude increases with wheel speed — small AC volts at low RPM rising to several volts at speed; frequency proportional to wheel speed
  • Active (hall/VR with electronics) sensors: produce digital pulse/square wave referenced to a supply (often 5 V or vehicle reference) — signal toggles between low and reference/ground; frequency proportional to wheel speed
  • Expected behavior: continuity (not open) at sensor leads for passive sensors; no short to chassis ground or battery. Signal should be clean and consistent as wheel rotates; amplitude/frequency should change smoothly with speed
  • Consult OEM spec for exact resistance, reference voltage and voltage levels for the vehicle being serviced

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool and record ABS and related codes and freeze frame data
  2. Visually inspect right‑rear sensor, connector, wiring harness and tone ring; repair any physical damage or contamination
  3. With ignition on, backprobe the sensor connector and check for reference voltage and ground (active sensor) or continuity/resistance (passive) per OEM procedure
  4. Spin the right‑rear wheel (raise vehicle safely on lift) while monitoring live wheel speed data — confirm sensor produces a stable speed signal
  5. Measure AC output with a multimeter (AC volts) or an oscilloscope while spinning wheel; look for clean periodic waveform (passive) or clean digital pulses (active)
  6. Perform a wiggle test on wiring and connectors while observing live data to find intermittent faults
  7. If sensor wiring or connector is open/corroded, repair or replace wiring/connector and retest
  8. If wiring and tone ring are good but no/weak signal, replace right‑rear wheel speed sensor and retest
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform a road test to confirm proper operation and no reappearance of C2141
  10. If fault remains after sensor/wiring/tone‑ring replacement, diagnose ABS control module inputs and grounds or consult OEM module diagnostics

Likely causes

  • Corroded connector or broken wire at the right‑rear sensor
  • Failed wheel speed sensor (internal open or short)
  • Damaged or missing tone ring teeth or heavy rust/debris on ring
  • Connector pins pushed out or bent allowing intermittent contact
  • Wire chafing to chassis ground under suspension movement
