Chassis Control Module Internal Fault

AI status

Completed

Causes
- Internal electronic/component failure in the chassis control module
- Corrupted or outdated module software/firmware
- Loss or fluctuation of module power supply (battery, fuse, relay)
- Poor or high-resistance ground connections
- CAN/LIN bus communication faults (shorts, opens, high resistance)
- Corroded/damaged connectors or wiring harness to the module
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or chassis/ABS/stability warning lamp illuminated
- Loss or intermittent operation of ABS, traction control, stability control, or other chassis systems
- Related modules report communication errors or timeouts
- Stored diagnostic trouble codes in CCM and possibly other modules
- Intermittent or no response when communicating with CCM via scan tool
- Vehicle may enter limp or reduced functionality mode
What to check
- Perform a full scan and record all stored and pending trouble codes and freeze-frame data
- Check main battery voltage with engine off and cranking; ensure within specification
- Inspect fuses and relays feeding the CCM; replace if faulty
- Visually inspect CCM connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, damaged insulation, or signs of water intrusion
- Verify good ground(s) at the CCM — measure resistance to battery negative
- Check for other modules reporting CAN bus errors and measure CAN bus voltages
Signal parameters
- Module supply voltage (nominal ~12V; during cranking typically >9V)
- Ignition 12V presence at CCM power pin(s)
- Ground continuity and resistance to chassis/battery negative (low ohms)
- CAN High/CAN Low idle voltages (~2.5V differential; each line ~2.5V midpoint)
- CAN bus dominant/recessive voltages and waveform integrity (use an oscilloscope)
- Module wake/sleep request signal state where applicable
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a capable scan tool and read all stored, pending, and archived codes from CCM and other modules; save data and freeze frame
- Verify battery condition and charge; ensure system voltage is stable during tests
- Inspect CCM connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, moisture, or damage; repair any issues found
- Check fuses/relays and verify proper power to module pins with a DMM
- Measure ground resistance from CCM ground to battery negative; repair grounds above specification
- Check CAN bus voltages at the CCM connector and confirm network communication with a scan tool; use an oscilloscope to inspect waveform quality if intermittent or abnormal
- Wiggle harnesses at connector and along routing while monitoring communication and codes to reproduce intermittent faults
- If power/ground/wiring and CAN are verified good, check for available software updates or reflash/reprogram CCM per OEM procedure
- If module fails internal tests, shows non-recoverable internal errors, or remains uncommunicative after verifying vehicle electrical integrity and reflashing, replace CCM and program/configure as required
- After repairs, clear codes and perform functional tests and road test to confirm proper operation; rescan to ensure no return of faults
Likely causes
- Low or intermittent battery voltage or blown fuse to CCM
- High-resistance or absent ground at the CCM
- CAN bus short or open preventing normal operation
- Corroded or damaged CCM connector/wiring
- Module internal hardware fault (failed component)
- Corrupted firmware requiring reflash or update
Fault status
Status
Chassis Control Module reported an internal fault. Module may be malfunctioning, misconfigured, or experiencing power/communication faults. Further electrical and communication diagnostics required before replacement.
Repair difficulty: Hard
Diagnostic time: 2-6 hours
