Causes

  • Low engine oil level or severely degraded/contaminated oil

  • Stretched or jumped timing chain / incorrect valve timing
  • Faulty intake camshaft position sensor or poor sensor signal

  • Rough idle or misfire at idle/low rpm
  • Reduced engine power and poor throttle response
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Hesitation or stumbling on acceleration
  • Possible unusual engine noise (rattle or knocking) if timing chain issues present

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and all stored DTCs (check for related cam/crank or bank 1 codes)
  • Check and record engine oil level, condition and service history
  • Scan live data: commanded vs actual intake camshaft angle, VVT duty cycle/pulsewidth, oil pressure
  • Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for this Land Rover model
  • Visual inspection of wiring and connectors at cam sensor(s) and VVT solenoid(s)
  • Measure resistance and bench‑test oil control valve operation

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs and freeze frame data. Note related codes (cam/crank P00xx series) and when fault occurred.
  2. Check engine oil level and condition. If low or dirty, restore correct level and replace oil/filter, then clear codes and retest.
  3. Inspect wiring and connectors for the intake cam sensor and VVT solenoid (bank 1). Repair any damaged wiring or poor connections.
  4. With a scan tool, monitor commanded vs actual intake cam angle and VVT solenoid command while varying RPM and load. Confirm the PCM is commanding changes and whether the actuator follows.
  5. Test the oil control valve electrically (resistance and apply battery power briefly) and functionally (observe movement or change in cam angle with scanner). Replace if inoperative or sticking.
  6. Check oil passages and VVT actuator for sludge/build‑up; if suspected, remove and inspect phaser and OCV. Clean or replace components as required.
  7. If electrical and hydraulic components test good but actual cam angle remains incorrect, perform mechanical timing inspection: check cam/crank correlation and timing chain/belt condition for stretch or jump.
  8. If mechanical timing is correct and components are replaced but fault persists, review PCM software level and consider PCM diagnosis/reprogramming.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test/extended idling while monitoring live data to confirm intake cam timing responds and code does not return.

  • Dirty oil or low oil level causing inadequate VVT oil pressure
  • Oil control valve (VVT solenoid) stuck or electrically failing
  • Cam phaser stuck or internal phaser failure
  • Timing chain/slack/jump resulting in mechanical timing error
  • Intake camshaft position sensor fault or intermittent wiring
