Intake cam profile control circuit (A) high - Bank 1

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Short to battery voltage on the intake cam profile control (A) circuit — Bank 1
  • Faulty intake cam profile actuator/solenoid (stuck or internally shorted)
  • Open or damaged wiring harness or connector (corrosion, broken pin)
  • Poor or missing ground
  • Contaminated or low engine oil causing actuator sticking
  • Faulty engine control module (ECM) or driver output

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine performance, hesitation or rough idle
  • Possible misfire symptoms or poor low-rpm response
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Engine may enter limp mode or have reduced power
  • Unusual noise from the timing cover/cam area (in some cases)

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and permanent codes with a qualified scan tool; confirm P001C is current and not historic only
  • Visual inspection of wiring and connector at the intake cam profile actuator (Bank 1) for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Check engine oil level and condition; very dirty or low oil can affect actuator operation
  • Backprobe actuator connector to measure voltage and ground with key ON engine OFF
  • Measure coil resistance of the actuator (with connector disconnected) and compare to spec
  • Check for continuity between actuator signal pin and ECM pin, and for shorts to battery or ground

Signal parameters

  • Expected battery supply voltage at actuator power feed: ~11–14.5 V (key ON/engine OFF)
  • Actuator control: PWM drive from ECM — duty cycle variable; frequency often 50–300 Hz depending on vehicle
  • Typical coil resistance (vehicle-dependent): commonly ~6–40 ohms (measure and compare to Land Rover spec)
  • A 'high' circuit DTC indicates voltage higher than expected on the control/signal line (possible short to battery or internal short)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify code: Connect a scanner, confirm P001C and note freeze frame data and whether the code is current or history. Clear codes and perform a test drive to see if code returns.
  2. Visual inspection: Inspect actuator connector, wiring harness route, and engine grounds for obvious damage, melted insulation, corrosion or oil contamination. Repair any obvious faults.
  3. Check oil: Verify oil level and condition; correct level and change oil if heavily contaminated before continuing diagnostics.
  4. Voltage/ground checks: Backprobe the actuator connector with key ON (engine OFF). Verify battery voltage at power feed and a good ground. If signal/control pin reads battery voltage (or erratic high voltage) with no command, suspect short to battery or stuck actuator.
  5. Coil resistance and bench test: With harness disconnected, measure coil resistance at actuator. Compare to spec. If shorted/OL/out-of-spec, replace actuator. If within spec, perform an actuator operation test per manufacturer procedure (apply ground/voltage or use scan tool to actuate) to observe movement.
  6. Wiring continuity and short test: With battery disconnected, check continuity between the actuator signal/power pins and the ECM connector. Check for shorts to battery or ground. Repair any open/shorted circuits.
  7. Scan-tool actuation: Use a capable scan tool to command the cam profile actuator and monitor live data (position, duty cycle). Observe behavior while manipulating wiring (wiggle test) to reproduce the fault.
  8. Swap/test ECM output: If wiring and actuator test good and issue persists, verify ECM output driver. As a last step, test or replace the ECM only after confirming wiring and actuator are fault-free and following manufacturer procedures.
  9. Repair and verify: Repair/replace components as indicated (connector repair, wiring repair, actuator replacement). Clear codes and road-test to confirm the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector at the cam profile actuator (corrosion, bent pin)
  • Internal short in the cam profile actuator/solenoid coil
  • Wiring rubbed through and contacting battery/ignition voltage
  • Poor ground at engine/ECM chassis connection
  • Contaminated oil preventing actuator movement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ECM detected an abnormally high voltage or signal on the Intake Cam Profile Control (A) circuit for Bank 1. This usually indicates a short to battery, internal actuator fault, wiring/connector issue, contaminated oil causing actuator binding, or less commonly ECM output driver fault. Replace or repair only after systematic verification.
