Signal parameters

  • Normal narrowband O2 sensor voltage range: ~0.1–0.9 V
  • Downstream (sensor 2) typically shows a steadier voltage near ~0.4–0.6 V when catalyst is good; long readings >0.9 V indicate high/rich or short to 12V
  • ECM fault criteria commonly: sensor signal above threshold (≈0.9 V) for a set time or repeated count
  • Heater circuit (if applicable) should see battery voltage on supply and low resistance to ground (check factory spec)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and live data. Confirm P0158 is active or historic and note conditions (RPM, load, temp).
  2. Compare Bank 2 Sensor 2 voltage to Bank 2 Sensor 1 and Bank 1 Sensor 2. A significantly higher/stuck voltage suggests wiring or sensor issue.
  3. Visually inspect harness and connector at the sensor and along the harness to the ECM for damage, corrosion or pinched wires.
  4. With key on engine off, backprobe the sensor signal wire and measure voltage. If ~12V or stuck high, disconnect connector — if voltage falls to expected range or 0 V, suspect short in harness or mating connector.
  5. Check for short to battery: isolate the signal wire and measure resistance to battery + with ignition off. Low resistance indicates short to 12V.
  6. Check sensor ground/reference continuity to ECU ground. Poor ground can cause erroneous high readings.
  7. If wiring checks OK, test the sensor itself: measure sensor output while engine running (use DSO/graphing scan tool if available) and compare behavior to a known good sensor or bank 1 sensor 2.
  8. Inspect for conditions that cause a legitimately rich reading: fuel pressure test, injector leak test, check for stuck open fuel pressure regulator or failed fuel pressure sensor.
  9. If wiring and fuel system OK, replace the Bank 2 Sensor 2 with a known good/new sensor and clear codes. Re-test on road and re-check live data.
  10. If problem persists after sensor replacement, inspect ECM grounds and perform ECU-related diagnostics — consult manufacturer service information for ECU tests.
