Causes

  • Blown fuel pump fuse
  • Faulty fuel pump relay
  • Open, shorted, corroded or damaged wiring or connectors in the pump power/ground circuit
  • Poor battery or chassis ground
  • Failed fuel pump (internal short or open)
  • Faulty ECM/PCM driver or internal relay driver fault

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminated
  • Intermittent or hard starting or no-start condition
  • Engine stalls while driving or immediately after starting
  • Reduced fuel pressure / poor engine performance
  • Fuel pump does not run when key is turned to ON or START
  • Possible pump runs continuously or erratically

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note related codes
  • Visual inspection of battery, ground points, fuses, relays and pump harness
  • Check fuse for continuity and relay operation (listen for click at key ON)
  • Measure battery voltage at battery and at fuel pump connector with key ON/START
  • Backprobe relay socket and pump connector for power and ground
  • Measure fuel pump current draw and compare to spec

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at fuel pump positive feed (V) with key ON/START
  • Voltage at pump negative/ground terminal (V) and continuity to chassis ground (Ω)
  • Voltage at ECM/relay control pin when key ON/START (V)
  • Relay coil voltage and switching contact voltage (V)
  • Fuel pump current draw (A) at operating voltage

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm P0230 and any related codes with a scan tool, record freeze frame and live data.
  2. Perform visual inspection: check fuse, relay, wiring harness for damage or corrosion; repair any obvious issues.
  3. Check fuse for continuity and replace if blown. If fuse blows again, suspect short to ground or pump fault.
  4. Operate ignition to ON (do not start) and listen for fuel pump prime. If no prime, backprobe relay coil and control circuit to verify relay activation.
  5. With key ON/START, measure voltage at the pump power terminal and ground. If power present but pump does not run, test pump by applying fused 12V directly to pump to verify operation.
  6. If no power at pump, trace power feed back to relay and fuse. Test relay by swapping with known-good relay or bench-testing relay socket signals.
  7. Check ground continuity from pump negative to chassis/ battery negative; repair poor ground as needed.
  8. Measure pump current draw; excessive draw indicates seized/weak pump, low draw or open indicates failed pump or open circuit.
  9. Inspect and repair any damaged wiring, connectors, or insulation, especially between module/relay and tank connector; use wiring diagrams for pin locations.
  10. If wiring, fuse, relay and pump test good, test ECM output driver for proper switching; consider ECM replacement only after verifying external circuitry.
  11. Clear codes and perform a road/operation test to confirm repair; re-scan for recurrence.

  • Blown or corroded fuse protecting the fuel pump circuit
  • Intermittent or stuck fuel pump relay contacts
  • Broken lead or connector at the fuel pump (inside tank or harness)
  • High resistance in ground or power feed causing voltage drop
  • Fuel pump motor drawing excessive current (partial failure)
  • ECM output transistor failure controlling the primary feed
