Causes

Signal parameters

  • Driver switching: low-side transistor that pulls primary to ground — primary waveform is a pulsed square/triangular current waveform
  • Dwell/ON time and pulse frequency vary with RPM and load — expect pulses during cranking and running
  • Absence of primary switching pulses, stuck-on/shorted primary, or abnormal waveform amplitude/shape indicates a fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and confirm P0355. Record freeze-frame and any accompanying P030x misfire codes.
  2. Perform a visual inspection: coil E, connector, wiring, and spark plug/boot for damage, corrosion, oil or water contamination.
  3. With ignition OFF, unplug coil E connector and inspect terminals for corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out pins.
  4. Swap coil E with a coil from another cylinder. Clear codes and run the engine. If the code/misfire follows the coil, replace the coil.
  5. If the code remains on the original cylinder, inspect wiring between coil and ECM: check for continuity and shorts to battery and ground. Repair any damaged wiring.
  6. Measure coil primary resistance (with coil unplugged) and compare to spec. Also measure secondary resistance between coil high-voltage output and primary circuit return. Replace coil if out of spec.
  7. With a lab scope or appropriate low-voltage test probe, check the primary drive waveform at the coil connector while cranking/running. Look for proper switching pulses. Absence or abnormal waveform suggests driver/ECM issue.
  8. Verify coil supply voltage (battery feed) and chassis/engine ground integrity at the coil connector.
  9. If wiring and coil are good but no primary drive is present or waveform is abnormal, test the ECM/ignition module driver output per manufacturer procedure (consult service manual).
  10. After repairs, clear codes and road-test to confirm the fault is resolved and no misfires recur.
