Causes

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze-frame and confirm active/inactive status with a capable scan tool
  • Attempt to actuate the shutter from the scan tool and observe movement and feedback
  • Visual inspection for debris, ice, bent fins, broken linkage, or external damage
  • Check for DTCs related to power/ground circuits or position sensor faults
  • Verify battery voltage and inspect fuse/relay protecting the AGAS circuit
  • Inspect connectors for corrosion, loose pins, or water intrusion at the shutter actuator

Signal parameters

  • Commanded position (scan-tool value): typically 0–100% open/closed depending on OEM
  • Actual/feedback position sensor voltage: nominal 0.0–5.0 V (varies by manufacturer)
  • Actuator supply voltage: ~12 V with ignition on (range ~11–14 V)
  • Actuator current draw while moving: typically low amperage (e.g., 0.1–2.0 A); high current may indicate binding
  • Resistance of actuator motor windings: manufacturer-specific but should not be open/infinite

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a scan tool to confirm P05A0 is current or historical and note any related codes or freeze-frame data.
  2. Command the AGAS A to move using the scan tool and observe: does it move, stall, or provide position feedback? Record commanded vs actual values.
  3. Visually inspect grill area and shutter assembly for foreign objects, ice, damaged fins, or linkage fracture. Remove any debris and try actuation again.
  4. With ignition on, measure battery voltage at the actuator power pin while commanding movement. If no power, trace fusible link/fuse/relay and check wiring to the controlling module.
  5. Verify ground continuity from actuator ground to chassis/ECM ground. Repair any poor ground connections.
  6. Measure the position sensor output while commanding movement. If the feedback is fixed or out of range, suspect sensor or internal actuator fault.
  7. If power and ground are present but the shutter does not move, measure actuator motor current while commanding movement. High current indicates binding; zero/low current with voltage present indicates motor fault or open winding.
  8. If the actuator is removable and safe to bench-test, disconnect and apply correct bench voltage to confirm operation. Replace actuator if it fails to operate correctly.
  9. Repair or replace damaged wiring/connectors and replace the actuator or shutter assembly as required. Perform any manufacturer-recommended calibration/relearn procedure after replacement.
  10. Clear codes and road-test to confirm proper operation and that the code does not return.

  • Actuator motor seized or internal gear stripped
  • Position sensor giving a fixed voltage/invalid feedback
  • Power or ground circuit fault to the actuator (blown fuse, corroded connector)
