P0607
Control Module Performance
Causes
- Intermittent or low battery/charging system voltage
- Poor or corroded power/ground connections to the control module
- CAN/LIN or other data-bus communication faults
- Corrupted or failed module software/firmware (need reflash)
- Internal hardware failure (processor, memory, solder joint, etc.)
- Water intrusion or physical damage to the module
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
- Vehicle may enter limp mode or have reduced performance
- Intermittent or no-start conditions in some cases
- Multiple, recurring or random diagnostic trouble codes across systems
- Loss or intermittent loss of functions controlled by the affected module (engine management, transmission shift control, etc.)
- Symptoms improve or codes clear temporarily after battery disconnect or clearing codes but reappear
What to check
- Read and record all stored/queued freeze-frame data and related DTCs before clearing codes
- Check battery voltage (resting and cranking) and charging system output
- Inspect power and ground connections at the control module for corrosion, tightness and continuity
- Scan for other modules reporting communication errors (CAN/LIN) or related P06xx codes
- Visually inspect the control module and connector for water, corrosion, or damaged pins/wires
- Check for recent software updates, failed reflash attempts or evidence of aftermarket module replacement
Signal parameters
- Battery voltage (key on and cranking)
- Charging system voltage and alternator output
- Module supply and ground continuity/voltage at connector pins
- CAN/LIN bus traffic and error counters (TX/RX counts, bus off)
- Watchdog resets, internal reset count or uptime (if available)
- Freeze-frame parameters: engine load, rpm, temp, throttle position at fault time
Diagnostic algorithm
- Capture all DTCs and freeze-frame data; do not clear until recorded. Check for additional P06xx or communication codes. 2) Verify battery state of charge and charging system health (battery, alternator). 3) Visually inspect and probe power and ground pins at the module connector for solid contact and correct voltage; repair any corrosion or loose connectors. 4) Inspect wiring harness for damage, pin corrosion, bent pins or water intrusion; repair as necessary. 5) Use a scan tool to monitor module communication on CAN/LIN while attempting to reproduce the fault; note bus errors or module dropouts. 6) If module reports software or memory faults, check for available technical service bulletins (TSBs) and reflash/update module software per OEM procedure. 7) If intermittent and all wiring/power/communications check good, perform a controlled soft reset (clear codes) and road test to attempt to reproduce. 8) If persistent after wiring, power and software verification, consider module bench testing, replacement and correct dealer-level programming/positioning. 9) After repair or module replacement, reprogram and calibrate the module as required and verify by clearing codes and confirming no recurrence under normal operation.
Likely causes
- Loose or high-resistance ground or battery terminal causing resets
- Corrupted ROM/flash from interrupted update or write failure
- Internal module memory (RAM/EEPROM) error or watchdog reset
- Damaged module connector or wiring short/open on supply or comm lines
- Aftermarket electrical accessory causing voltage spikes or bus errors

P0607
Engine ECU
