Causes

  • Failed glow plug (open or high resistance)
  • Damaged wiring or broken conductor to glow plug 9
  • Corroded or loose connector at glow plug 9
  • Faulty glow plug driver module / relay
  • Faulty engine control module (ECM) output stage
  • Blown fuse or poor battery/ground connection

Symptoms

  • Hard cold starts or extended cranking time
  • Rough idle or misfire on initial warm-up
  • Glow plug/warm-up indicator or MIL illuminated
  • Reduced cold-engine performance
  • Possible diagnostic trouble codes related to glow plug circuits

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and stored codes with a scan tool; confirm P069A and any related codes
  • Verify battery voltage and system charge (battery should be fully charged before tests)
  • Visually inspect glow plug 9 connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose pins
  • Measure voltage at glow plug 9 connector while ECM commands the glow plug ON
  • Measure resistance of glow plug 9 (engine cold) and compare to specification
  • Check for blown fuses and correct operation of glow relay/driver module

Signal parameters

  • Commanded supply voltage at glow plug connector: approximately battery voltage when energized (typically ~11–14V) or a PWM-modulated B+ signal depending on system
  • Glow plug resistance (cold): typically low ohms (commonly ~0.2–3.0 Ω — consult vehicle spec)
  • Expected current draw when energized: several amps per plug (varies by design); a near-zero current indicates open/high-resistance circuit
  • Control signal from ECM may be PWM; duty cycle varies with temperature and system design

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm code: Use a scan tool to confirm P069A, note freeze-frame data and whether code is current or intermittent.
  2. Battery & supply check: Verify battery voltage ≥12.4 V and good ground connections. Low supply can cause false low-circuit detections.
  3. Visual inspection: With ignition off, inspect connector, pins and harness for damage, corrosion, bent pins or separation at cylinder 9 glow plug.
  4. Resistance test: Disconnect glow plug 9 and measure its resistance to engine ground. If open or significantly above spec, replace the glow plug.
  5. Voltage under command: Reconnect, back-probe the supply terminal of glow plug 9. Command glow on via scan tool and observe voltage. No/very low voltage indicates open supply, fuse/relay or driver fault.
  6. Current draw test: If possible, measure current to the glow plug while commanded on. Very low or zero current with a commanded ON indicates open/high resistance.
  7. Harness continuity: With power removed, check continuity between the glow plug connector and the glow driver/ECM pin. Check for shorts to ground or opens.
  8. Swap test (if applicable): If another cylinder uses the same driver channel or harness configuration, swap components (glow plug or harness) to see if code follows the part.
  9. Inspect/replace driver or relay: If wiring and glow plug test good, test or replace the glow plug driver module or relay per manufacturer procedure.
  10. ECM check: If driver, wiring, and glow plug are confirmed good and fault persists, consider ECM output stage failure and pursue further ECM diagnostics or replacement per manufacturer guidance.
  11. Clear codes & retest: After repair, clear codes and perform multiple cold start cycles or drive cycles to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at glow plug 9
  • Failed glow plug (high resistance or open)
  • Damaged harness (chafing, broken wire) between ECM/driver and glow plug
  • Failed glow plug driver/relay

Fault status

⚠️ Status
