Causes

  • Worn or slipping clutch pack for 4th gear

What to check

  • Read stored and pending DTCs and freeze frame data with a scanner; note related transmission codes
  • Compare requested gear vs actual gear and note when fault sets
  • Scan live data: engine RPM, vehicle speed, transmission input (turbine) and output speed sensors
  • Check transmission fluid level, color and smell; correct fluid type
  • Inspect wiring and connectors to speed sensors, shift solenoids and TCM for damage/corrosion
  • Command shift solenoids with a diagnostic tool and observe responses and current draw

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve codes and freeze frame data; clear codes and perform a controlled road test while logging transmission parameters to reproduce P0734.
  2. Verify vehicle speed and engine RPM relationship in 4th gear. Calculate measured gear ratio from input and output speeds and compare to expected ratio from service data.
  3. Inspect fluid: check level, condition and correct fluid type; replace or top up if low/contaminated and retest.
  4. Inspect wiring and connectors for speed sensors and shift solenoids; repair any damage and check for short/open circuits.
  5. Use a diagnostic tool to command the 4th-gear shift solenoid(s) and monitor responses, solenoid current, and pressure where possible.
  6. If solenoid tests fail or behave intermittently, substitute or bench-test solenoids per factory procedure before replacing the transmission.
  7. Perform valve body and pressure tests: measure line pressure and apply specific tests for internal leaks or spool sticking as per service manual.
  8. If hydraulic and solenoid tests are normal, suspect internal mechanical wear (clutch pack, band, planetary components) — consider transmission removal and disassembly or specialist inspection.
  9. Check for TCM software updates, reset adaptations and reflash if recommended by manufacturer; retest after software action.
  10. After repairs, erase codes, re-run road test and confirm the gear ratio is within specification and no further P0734 sets.

  • Shift solenoid for 4th gear stuck or electrically faulty
  • Worn clutch pack or internal slipping when 4th is engaged
  • Low fluid level or degraded fluid causing loss of pressure
  • Faulty input/output speed sensor or bad speed signal
