Causes

  • Low or degraded automatic transmission fluid (ATF) level or quality
  • Faulty/stuck shift solenoid for 6th gear or related solenoids
  • Valve body hydraulic issue (blocked port, worn spool)
  • Worn or damaged 6th gear clutch pack or planetary gearset components
  • Mechanical damage in the transmission (gear teeth, bearings, final drive)
  • Incorrect final drive or rear gear setup/adjustment after service

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • No engagement of 6th gear or transmission skips to a different gear
  • RPMs higher or lower than expected at cruising speed (incorrect ratio)
  • Hesitation, harsh or delayed shift into top gear
  • Transmission may go into limp/backup mode
  • Reduced fuel economy at highway speeds

What to check

  • Read and record all stored transmission-related DTCs and freeze frame data
  • Confirm vehicle test conditions (tire size, final drive ratio, load) match vehicle specification
  • Visual inspection of ATF level and condition (color, odor, contamination)
  • Road test to reproduce fault and note at what speeds/conditions P0736 sets
  • Capture live data: engine RPM, transmission input and output speeds, commanded gear and actual gear
  • Compare calculated gear ratio (engine RPM/vehicle speed or input/output speed) to expected specification for 6th gear

Signal parameters

  • Engine RPM (rpm)
  • Transmission input speed or turbine speed (rpm)
  • Transmission output speed or vehicle speed sensor (kph or mph, or rpm)
  • Calculated gear ratio (input speed ÷ output speed) vs expected ratio for 6th gear
  • TCM commanded gear and TCM actual / gear state
  • Shift solenoid command (ON/OFF or duty cycle) and measured solenoid current/voltage

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve P0736 and any related codes (P07xx family, speed sensor, solenoid codes). Record freeze frame and clear codes; attempt to reproduce.
  2. Verify vehicle configuration: correct tire size, final drive ratio and that recent service did not change rear gear adjustment.
  3. Check ATF level/condition; if low or contaminated, top/replace ATF per manufacturer spec and retest.
  4. Perform a road test while monitoring live data (engine rpm, input/output speeds, commanded gear). Note actual ratio in 6th gear and compare to specification.
  5. Inspect wiring/connectors for speed sensors, solenoids, and TCM. Repair any damage and retest.
  6. Test shift solenoid(s): measure resistance, perform active tests (command solenoid) and observe response in live data.
  7. If electrical and solenoid operation are good, check valve body and line pressure (specialty tools may be required). Low line pressure or incorrect valve operation can prevent proper clutch engagement.
  8. If hydraulic pressures and valve body check OK, suspect internal clutch pack or gearset wear/damage — remove transmission for internal inspection/rebuild or replace as required.
  9. Check for TCM software updates and perform adaptation/relearn procedures after repairs; clear codes and verify repair by road test.
  10. If manufacturer-specific rear gear adjustment procedure exists (GWM), follow factory service manual for correct adjustment and torque specifications before final verification.

Likely causes

  • Low ATF level or fluid contaminated causing inadequate pressure to engage 6th gear
  • Shift solenoid for 6th gear electrical failure or intermittent operation
  • Valve body spool or bore wear causing loss of hydraulic control for 6th clutch
  • Worn 6th clutch pack or plates producing slippage under load
  • Wrong final drive toothing or backlash after differential/service adjustment
  • Bad output speed sensor or input speed sensor providing incorrect speed signals to TCM

Fault status

⚠️ Status
TCM detected actual gear ratio out of range for 6th gear — fault stored (manufacturer note: reported as rear gear incorrectly adjusted). MIL illuminated; vehicle may not engage or maintain 6th gear reliably.
🔴 Repair difficulty: Hard
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 2-6 hours
