Shift Solenoid H Stuck On

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Short or low resistance in solenoid circuit (wiring short to battery or ground)
  • Stuck or mechanically failed shift solenoid/valve (internal to valve body)
  • Faulty transmission control module (TCM) or driver transistor
  • Corroded/loose connector or poor pin contact at solenoid harness
  • Contaminated or degraded transmission fluid causing valve sticking
  • Intermittent open/short in wiring harness (chafing, pinched, or damaged insulation)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light / transmission MIL illuminated
  • Transmission stuck in certain gear or fails to shift properly
  • Harsh or delayed shifts, or transmission stays in high/low gear
  • Limp-home mode (reduced gear range) may be active
  • Unusual transmission noise or fluid pressure issues

What to check

  • Retrieve permanent/freeze-frame data and full list of stored codes with a scan tool
  • Visually inspect solenoid H connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, loose or damaged wires
  • Check transmission fluid level and condition (burnt smell, metal particles)
  • Using scan tool, command solenoid H ON/OFF and observe commanded status and any change in behavior
  • Check for additional related codes (TCM, system voltage, or pressure sensor codes)

Signal parameters

  • Solenoid coil resistance (typical range 6–40 Ω; manufacturer spec required)
  • Idle/Off voltage at harness: ~0 V (open circuit)
  • Commanded On: PWM or switched 12 V depending on vehicle (duty cycle 0–100%)
  • When commanded On, current draw should rise to expected level (verify with clamp meter); stuck-on may show continuous voltage/current when commanded Off
  • PWM frequency typically 50–300 Hz on many transmissions (refer to vehicle spec)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record freeze frame and all related DTCs with a OEM-capable scan tool.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce. Note whether P076C returns immediately or after driving.
  3. Visually inspect solenoid H connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, or wiring chafing. Repair any obvious damage and reconnect securely.
  4. Measure solenoid coil resistance at the connector (unplug harness from solenoid). Compare to spec. If resistance is very low (near short) or infinite, suspect solenoid fault.
  5. With harness disconnected, check harness continuity to TCM and for shorts to battery or ground. Back-probe connector: verify voltage present only when commanded (use scan tool to command ON/OFF).
  6. Command solenoid H ON/OFF with scan tool while monitoring voltage and current. If solenoid is commanded Off but voltage/current present, suspect short in wiring or TCM driver failure.
  7. Bench test solenoid by applying appropriate battery voltage (or PWM as required) to confirm mechanical operation and current draw. Replace if it does not operate or draws abnormal current.
  8. If wiring, connector, and solenoid test good, investigate valve body for internal stuck spool or contamination; remove valve body as required for inspection and cleaning or replacement.
  9. If repairs performed, clear codes and test drive. If problem persists with verified wiring and solenoid replacement, consider TCM/PCM driver fault and pursue module testing or replacement per manufacturer procedure.

Likely causes

  • Faulty/shorted shift solenoid H
  • Corroded or damaged solenoid connector or harness near transmission
  • Transmission fluid contamination causing valve to stick
  • Valve body internal fault (sticking spool or debris)
