Causes

  • Low or contaminated transmission fluid
  • Faulty shift solenoid(s) or pressure control solenoid
  • Wiring harness or connector fault to transmission/solenoid/TCM
  • Failing valve body or stuck valve
  • Worn clutch pack or band for 3rd gear
  • Defective input/turbine or output speed sensor

Symptoms

  • Delayed, harsh, or no shift when leaving 3rd gear
  • Transmission may remain in 3rd or slip during acceleration
  • Check Engine / Transmission warning lamp illuminated
  • Reduced performance or limp-home mode
  • Unusual transmission fluid odor, dark color, or metal particles

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and all stored transmission/engine codes and note conditions when the fault set
  • Visual inspection of transmission fluid level, color and smell; inspect for leaks
  • Inspect wiring and connectors to transmission, solenoids and TCM for damage/corrosion
  • Scan-tool live data: monitor commanded gear, actual gear (speed sensor ratio), solenoid states and duty cycles, line pressure if available, and ATF temp
  • Perform road test while logging data to reproduce incorrect shift
  • Check battery and charging system voltage under load

Signal parameters

  • TCM commanded gear / shift request
  • Calculated gear ratio (input/turbine speed vs output speed)
  • Shift solenoid status and duty cycle (%)
  • Transmission line pressure (kPa or psi) during shift event
  • Transmission fluid temperature (°C/°F)
  • Engine RPM and vehicle speed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all transmission and engine codes, freeze frame and mileage. Do not clear codes yet.
  2. Verify the symptom by road-testing under similar conditions while logging recommended signal parameters (TCM commanded gear, speeds, solenoid states, line pressure if available).
  3. Check transmission fluid level, condition and temperature. If fluid is low, top to spec and inspect for leaks; if burnt or contaminated, consider fluid/filter service before further diagnostics.
  4. Perform a thorough visual inspection of wiring and connectors to the transmission, solenoids and TCM. Repair any damaged or corroded connectors and re-test.
  5. Using a scan tool, command shift out of 3rd (if tool supports bi-directional control) and observe whether solenoid commands occur and whether speeds/gear ratio respond appropriately.
  6. Measure solenoid resistance and compare to specification. Backprobing while commanding can verify operation. Replace suspect solenoid(s) and retest.
  7. If available, measure hydraulic line pressure with a gauge during a shift attempt. Low or fluctuating pressure indicates pump, regulator or internal leakage/valve body issue.
  8. Check input and output speed sensors for correct signal, wiring continuity and proper installation. Replace if faulty and retest.
  9. If electrical and sensor checks pass but shift still incorrect, inspect or service the valve body (clean/replace solenoids, check for stuck valves) and consider filter replacement.
  10. If hydraulic and valve body repairs do not restore proper shifting, consider clutch pack inspection/repair or transmission teardown. If multiple modules/codes or abnormal TCM behavior, evaluate TCM software update or replacement.
  11. After repairs, clear codes, perform relearns/adaptations per manufacturer procedure, then road test to verify the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Shift solenoid malfunction or electrical fault affecting third-gear control
  • Low/overheated/contaminated ATF causing improper hydraulic actuation
  • Valve body sticking or internal hydraulic leak reducing clutch apply
  • Incorrect speed sensor signals causing wrong gear detection
