Clutch Position Sensor B Circuit Intermittent

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Intermittent open or short in clutch position sensor B wiring
  • Loose, corroded or damaged connector at sensor or harness
  • Sensor internal fault (intermittent contact or PCB issue)
  • Chafed or broken wire near the pedal pivot or chassis
  • Poor ground or supply voltage interruptions
  • Water intrusion or contamination in connector

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) set intermittently
  • Intermittent inability to start (clutch-start interlock) or sporadic start/no-start
  • Cruise control may disable unexpectedly
  • Erratic shift behaviour on automated/manual hybrid transmissions
  • Intermittent stalling or poor idle behavior when clutch engaged/disengaged
  • Diagnostics show fluctuating or missing clutch position values

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and supporting data with a scan tool; note when code set and other related codes
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector, and wiring harness along full routing, especially at pedal pivot
  • Wiggle test wiring/connectors while monitoring live data to try to reproduce the fault
  • Backprobe connector and measure reference, ground, and signal with a multimeter or oscilloscope
  • Check for continuity and intermittent opens/shorts using meter and gentle flexing
  • Inspect for water, corrosion, or melted insulation at connector and harness

Signal parameters

  • Typical signal type: low-voltage analog (potentiometer) or digital/Hall switch depending on design
  • Typical voltage range (analog sensors): ~0.5–4.5 V across pedal travel (verify vehicle spec)
  • At rest vs fully depressed: smooth, monotonic change in voltage; no sudden dropouts
  • If Hall/switch type: clean switching between ~0 V and ~5 V without chatter
  • Signal should not intermittently go open (no reading) or rapidly jump; check update rate corresponds to pedal movement

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs and freeze frame, note conditions when fault occurred (ignition on, engine running, pedal position).
  2. Attempt to reproduce: monitor live clutch position B (and A if present) while operating pedal; perform wiggle tests on harness and connector.
  3. Visually inspect connector and harness for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, water entry, and chafed areas near the pedal pivot or firewall.
  4. Backprobe connector: with key ON (engine off) measure reference voltage and ground, then monitor signal while moving pedal. Record any dropouts or voltage spikes.
  5. If intermittent not seen with multimeter, use an oscilloscope or graphing scan tool to capture transient interruptions or noise during flex/wiggle testing.
  6. Check continuity and resistance of signal and ground circuits from sensor connector to ECU connector; perform a load/voltage drop test to reveal high-resistance connections.
  7. If wiring/harness fault found, repair by replacing damaged section or soldering and heat-shrinking; replace corroded connectors. Use dielectric grease on connectors if appropriate.
  8. If wiring checks good but signal still intermittent, replace the clutch position sensor and retest.
  9. After repair, clear codes, perform functional test and a road test under the same conditions to ensure code does not return.
  10. If problem persists and wiring/sensor verified, consider ECU input diagnostics or replacement as a last step.

Likely causes

  • Broken or frayed wire where harness flexes at pedal hinge
  • Connector terminals corroded or pushed out, causing intermittent contact
  • Sensor potentiometer or Hall element developing intermittent contact
  • Poor ground at pedal assembly or shared ground point
  • Aftermarket pedal devices or recent repairs disturbed wiring
