Shift Solenoid E Circuit Malfunction

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or short in the solenoid E wiring (broken conductor, chafing, pinched harness)
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged transmission connector or terminals
  • Failed shift solenoid E (coil short/open or internal mechanical failure)
  • Faulty fuse or transmission/TCM relay (loss of power or ground)
  • Valve body hydraulic fault or stuck spool valve affecting solenoid function
  • Poor or low transmission fluid level/contamination affecting solenoid operation

Symptoms

  • Check Engine/Transmission warning lamp illuminated
  • Harsh, delayed, or erratic shifting
  • Transmission stuck in a single gear or limp/limitation mode
  • No shift into expected gear(s) or inability to downshift/upshift
  • Unusual transmission noise or slipping under load
  • Diagnostic trouble codes related to other solenoids or pressure control

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and related transmission codes with a scan tool
  • Visually inspect transmission fluid level and condition
  • Inspect harness and connector at transmission for corrosion, damage, or loose pins
  • Check fuses and transmission/TCM relay for proper operation
  • Backprobe solenoid connector to confirm power/ground presence while commanded
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance at the connector (with harness disconnected if required)

Signal parameters

  • Solenoid coil resistance (Ohms)
  • Circuit supply voltage (V) at connector with key ON
  • Ground continuity (ohms) to chassis/PCM ground
  • Commanded solenoid state (ON/OFF) from TCM (live data)
  • PWM duty cycle (%) and frequency (Hz) when solenoid is modulated
  • Solenoid current draw (A) during activation

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve code(s) and freeze-frame data with a scan tool. Note related transmission codes and operating conditions.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition; correct if low or contaminated before further testing.
  3. Perform visual inspection of the transmission harness and connector for damage, corrosion, or loose pins; repair as needed.
  4. Verify fuses and transmission/TCM power relay. Replace if faulty and retest for code presence.
  5. With key ON (engine off), backprobe the solenoid E connector: confirm battery voltage on supply pin and good ground on ground pin.
  6. Disconnect connector and measure solenoid coil resistance. Compare to manufacturer specification. An open or short indicates a bad solenoid or wiring.
  7. Check continuity between the solenoid connector and the TCM pin to locate opens/shorts. Repair any wiring faults.
  8. With a lab or bench supply (or using backprobe per service manual), apply the correct voltage to the solenoid to verify activation and measure current draw. Listen for mechanical click.
  9. Use a scan tool to command solenoid E ON/OFF while monitoring commanded state, actual state, PWM duty cycle, and transmission pressure if available. Look for response and compare to spec.
  10. If electrical tests are good but symptoms persist, inspect valve body and hydraulic circuits for stuck spools or contamination; remove and service as required.
  11. Replace the solenoid if bench testing or resistance indicates failure. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test to confirm correct operation.
  12. If all wiring, solenoid, and valve body are good and code returns, consider PCM/TCM fault and follow manufacturer procedures for module testing/replacement.

Likely causes

  • Open or shorted wiring to shift solenoid E
  • Corroded/poor connector at transmission harness
  • Failed solenoid (coil resistance out of spec)
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying solenoid power
