Causes
- Open or high-resistance connection in the temperature sensor circuit
- Short to voltage on the sensor signal or reference wire
- Poor or missing ground at the pump control module
- Corroded/loose connector pins or damaged harness near the pump/module
- Failed internal temperature sensor or failed pump control module
- Intermittent wiring damage or water intrusion
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or transmission-related warning light
- Reduced or disabled auxiliary/pump operation
- Transmission or pump derate, reduced performance
- Possible stored freeze frame and related transmission codes
- No start or cross-system warnings on some vehicles (rare)
What to check
- Read freeze frame and related DTCs; record ignition and engine state when set
- Visually inspect harness and connectors at the pump and control module for damage, corrosion, or contamination
- Check and clean connector mating faces and pins; ensure tight fit
- Measure module ground(s) for low resistance to chassis/ battery negative
- Backprobe sensor signal and reference with scan tool live data and multimeter
- Compare measured voltages/resistances to expected values
Signal parameters
- Reference voltage: typically 5 V reference from module (verify with OEM wiring)
- Expected sensor signal (typical thermistor): 0–5 V depending on temperature; at ambient often ~1–4 V
- Open/high circuit often reads near reference (close to 5 V) or diagnostic returns 'high' status
- Typical thermistor resistance at ambient: often ~1 kΩ–10 kΩ (manufacturer specific); resistance falls with rising temperature for NTC sensors
- Module ground circuit resistance: ideally
Diagnostic algorithm
- Verify the DTC and note freeze frame/related codes. Clear the code and see if it returns.
- With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the temperature sensor signal wire at the pump/module. Observe signal voltage with a good ground. If signal is near reference voltage (~5 V) or above spec, suspect open/high or short to Vb.
- Measure resistance of the internal sensor circuit if serviceable (module removed or harness disconnected). Compare to ambient resistance spec or look for open circuit (infinite).
- Inspect and wiggle harness while monitoring signal for intermittent changes. Repair or replace damaged wiring or connectors.
- Verify module ground(s) and power supply (battery voltage present, good fused feed). Repair grounds or power as needed.
- If wiring and connectors test good, swap with a known-good module if available or perform module bench diagnostics per OEM procedure.
- After repairs, clear codes and perform a road or functional test to confirm the fault does not return and pump operates correctly.
- If fault persists and wiring is confirmed good, replace the pump control module or pump assembly per manufacturer procedure.
Likely causes
- Broken/disconnected sensor signal wire or connector
- Corroded connector or pin at the pump/module
- Shorted sensor wire to battery voltage (fused or unfused)
- Faulty pump control module electronics
