Causes

What to check

  • Read stored codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool; note any related codes (throttle, sensor 2, communication)
  • Observe live APP sensor 1 and sensor 2 values while slowly pressing and releasing the pedal; check for smooth, proportional change
  • Visually inspect pedal assembly, connector, wiring harness and ECM connector for damage, corrosion or loose pins
  • Backprobe connector: verify 5 V reference, sensor signal voltage and ground continuity
  • Check fuses and power supplies for the throttle/ECM circuits
  • Wiggle test wiring and connector while monitoring live data to find intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage: ~5.0 V (typically 4.75–5.25 V) present at the sensor reference pin
  • Signal output (sensor 1): varies with pedal travel ~0.5–4.5 V (should change smoothly from rest to full travel)
  • Ground: near 0 V with good continuity to chassis/ECM ground
  • Sensor signal difference: sensor 1 and sensor 2 should correlate; large mismatch indicates sensor/harness fault
  • Open-circuit: signal may read battery voltage or no voltage if shorted/open

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool, read PIDs, DTCs and freeze frame; record APP sensor 1 and sensor 2 readings at key positions.
  2. Visually inspect pedal, connector and harness for damage, corrosion or water ingress; repair obvious issues.
  3. With ignition ON (engine OFF), backprobe the sensor connector: confirm 5 V reference, signal voltage and ground continuity.
  4. Slowly operate pedal while watching live sensor voltages. Verify smooth, proportional change in sensor 1 and check correlation with sensor 2.
  5. If reference or ground is missing or out of range, trace wiring to fuse/ECM and repair wiring or replace blown fuse.
  6. If signal is stuck, intermittent, or out-of-range with good reference/ground, disconnect sensor and check for wiring short to battery/ground using an ohmmeter/voltmeter.
  7. Perform wiggle tests on harness and connectors to replicate intermittent faults; repair or replace damaged wiring as found.
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good but sensor 1 is faulty (does not change or outputs incorrect voltage), replace the accelerator pedal position sensor assembly.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform functional test/road test to verify proper operation and that the code does not return.
  10. If faults persist after sensor and harness replacement, consider ECM diagnosis or software/calibration update at dealer level.
