Causes

  • Corroded or loose connector pins at coil/igniter or ECM

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated with P1300 stored
  • Misfire felt at idle or under load, often cylinder‑1 related
  • Poor idle quality, rough running or hesitation
  • Hard starting or no‑start condition in some cases
  • Reduced engine power or drivability complaints

What to check

  • Read and record freeze‑frame and all stored DTCs with a scan tool
  • Check misfire counters and whether code is accompanied by P03xx (cylinder misfire) codes
  • Visually inspect spark plug, ignition coil and igniter connectors for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Inspect wiring harness for chafing, pinches, melted insulation or rodent damage between coil/igniter and ECM
  • Measure battery and charging system voltage while cranking and idling
  • Perform a wiggle test of wiring/connectors while monitoring for code set or change in signal

Signal parameters

  • Igniter driver signal (IGT) from ECM — pulse presence and duty during cranking/run
  • Igniter feedback signal (IGF) to ECM — confirms coil fire; presence/absence/frequency
  • Coil primary voltage (12 V supply) and ground integrity at coil connector
  • Coil primary resistance (ohms) and coil secondary resistance (kΩ) compared to spec
  • Battery voltage during cranking and running (V)
  • Crankshaft position sensor (CKP) reference correlation to ignition events

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool, record all codes and freeze‑frame data; note any related misfire (P03xx) or coil circuit (P035x) codes
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; monitor IGT/IGF and misfire counters while cranking and running
  3. Visually inspect ignition coil, igniter and cylinder‑1 spark plug for damage, carbon tracking or oil fouling; replace if obviously defective
  4. Inspect connectors and wiring from cylinder‑1 coil/igniter to the ECU for corrosion, bent pins, open or short circuits; repair any damage
  5. Measure coil primary and secondary resistance against manufacturer spec; if out of range, replace coil
  6. Check for 12 V supply and ground at coil/igniter connector with key ON and during cranking; repair supply/ground as needed
  7. If wiring and coil appear OK, swap coil/igniter with another cylinder and see if the code/misfire follows the part (use caution and label parts)
  8. If code follows the igniter/coil, replace the faulty component and clear codes; retest for proper operation
  9. If code does not follow component and wiring checks are good, test ECM ignition driver output and inputs (or consult wiring diagram and perform back‑probing tests); consider ECM replacement only after thorough verification
