Causes

  • Failed ignition coil (coil-on-plug or coil pack) on cylinder 6

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and live data (misfire counters, coil status)
  • Visual inspection of coil 6, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or oil
  • Check coil supply fuse(s) and relay(s) for continuity and operation
  • Measure coil primary and secondary resistance and compare with factory spec
  • Backprobe coil connector with key ON/engine cranking to verify supply voltage and switching driver
  • Swap coil 6 with a known-good coil on another cylinder to see if code follows

Signal parameters

  • Coil supply voltage (should be battery voltage with key ON; ~12V nominal)
  • Primary coil resistance (check against OEM spec)
  • Secondary coil resistance (check against OEM spec)
  • Primary current pulses / dwell time when cranking or running

  • Cylinder 6 misfire counter and ignition command status from scan tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool. Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data. Note misfire counts for cylinder 6.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of coil 6, connector and wiring. Repair any obvious damage or corrosion.
  3. With ignition OFF, unplug coil 6 and measure primary and secondary resistances. Compare with factory specification.
  4. Swap coil 6 with another cylinder's coil. Clear codes and run the engine. If code moves to the other cylinder, replace the coil.
  5. With connector plugged in, backprobe the coil connector with key ON (engine OFF) to verify constant supply voltage and good ground reference. Crank engine and observe driver switching.
  6. Use an oscilloscope or scope-capable scan tool to observe primary waveform while cranking/running. Look for absent or abnormal pulses.
  7. If no driver pulse at coil but wiring is good, check continuity from coil connector to ECM and inspect ECM power/ground. If wiring is intact and ECM does not command, consider ECM/driver fault.
  8. Repair or replace defective coil, wiring, connector, or fuse/relay as indicated. After repair, clear codes and confirm repair with test drive and scan tool verification.
  9. If ECM replacement is considered, confirm all wiring, grounds and supply voltages are within spec and perform OEM ECM replacement procedures.
