Causes

What to check

  • Check connector pins are straight and fully seated; look for bent, pushed-back, or corroded pins
  • Verify battery voltage and main grounds are within specification
  • Monitor live-data and compare sensor/actuator values to expected ranges
  • Wiggle test harness while observing live-data to reproduce fault

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor supply: 5 V reference (verify actual spec for the specific sensor)
  • Signal voltage range: usually 0.0–5.0 V depending on sensor type; expected steady or proportionate change with input
  • Signal pulsed/frequency outputs (if applicable): check waveform with oscilloscope for smooth, noise-free pattern
  • Circuit continuity/resistance: low ohms for supply/ground, sensor-specific resistance values per service data
  • Response time: sensor/actuator should respond promptly without droop or intermittent dropouts

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture codes, freeze-frame, and live-data. Note any other stored codes that may be related.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor/actuator and associated harness for damage, chafing, corrosion or evidence of water.
  3. Check power and ground at the sensor connector with key on. Verify reference voltage (often 5V) and ground continuity back to battery.
  4. Back-probe the signal wire and observe live voltage/waveform with a DVOM and/or oscilloscope while operating the system to see if signal is out-of-range, noisy, or intermittent.
  5. Perform a wiggle/pressure test on the harness while monitoring signal to attempt to reproduce the fault.
  6. Measure continuity/resistance between sensor connector and ECM connector to rule out harness faults. Repair any opens/shorts.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good, swap or bench-test the suspect sensor/actuator if a known-good unit is available, or replace the component per manufacturer guidance.
  8. If new component does not clear code, or wiring checks OK, update ECM software if available and consider ECM replacement only after thorough confirmation.
  9. Clear codes and perform a test drive to confirm the fault does not return and that vehicle returns to normal operation.
