What to check

  • Check fuses and relays feeding the throttle body and ECU
  • Measure power supply and ground at the throttle body connector
  • Scan live data: throttle position sensor(s), pedal position sensors, motor command and feedback

Signal parameters

  • Battery/supply voltage at throttle body: ~11–14.5 V (should be stable)
  • Throttle position/pedal sensor voltages: typically 0.5–4.5 V (dependent on manufacturer)
  • Motor drive command: PWM or variable duty signal from ECU (verify frequency with scope)

  • No high-current draw or short to ground on the motor circuit during actuation

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, record all codes and freeze-frame data, then clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Verify battery state of charge and charging system; ensure voltage is within specification before continuing.
  3. Visually inspect throttle body, connectors, wiring harness, and grounds for damage, corrosion, crushed wires or pin misalignment.
  4. Check fuses/relays related to throttle and ECU; replace if suspect.
  5. With ignition ON (engine off) measure supply voltage and ground at throttle body connector; confirm stable supply and good ground.
  6. Check throttle and pedal sensor voltages and compare multi-point readings to expected ranges; look for sensor mismatch or implausible values.
  7. Use a capable scanner to command throttle body actuation while observing motor response and current draw; note any abnormal noise or failure to move.
  8. Inspect for short-to-ground or short-to-power in motor wiring (resistance/continuity checks).
  9. If wiring and supply are good but actuator fails, replace or refurbish the throttle body assembly and retest.
  10. After repair or replacement perform throttle adaptation/learn procedure per factory instructions and clear codes; road test to verify.
  11. If fault persists with good throttle assembly and wiring, investigate ECU/software: reflash/update PCM, check for other module faults or replace control module as last resort.
