2 - 3 Malfunction of the transmission

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Low or contaminated automatic transmission fluid (ATF)
  • Faulty 2-3 shift solenoid or solenoid valve
  • Valve body internal wear, sticking valve or bore wear
  • Weak or failed transmission pump causing low line pressure
  • Worn or damaged 2-3 clutch pack or band
  • Faulty transmission control module (TCM) or incorrect software/calibration

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine light) illuminated
  • Harsh, delayed or erratic 2→3 upshift
  • Vehicle stuck in 2nd gear or no 3rd gear engagement
  • Transmission slipping or loss of drive during 2→3 shift
  • Limp-in or reduced performance mode
  • Unusual transmission noises during shifting

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze frame data with a full scan tool
  • Check for related transmission codes and historical/ pending codes
  • Review manufacturer TSBs and software updates for P1732 or shift issues
  • Visually inspect transmission fluid level and condition (color, odor, contamination)
  • Inspect wiring harness and connectors at transmission and TCM for damage, corrosion, loose pins, and proper grounding
  • Check ATF filter and pan for metal debris or contamination

Signal parameters

  • Shift solenoid B/A commanded state (ON/OFF) vs actual response
  • Shift solenoid resistance (ohms) — compare to service spec
  • Line pressure (kPa or psi) at key RPM/load points — compare to spec
  • Transmission output speed (vehicle speed sensor) and turbine/input speed — check for correct ratio change at shift
  • Clutch pressure or apply pressure (kPa) for 2-3 shift (if supported by scan tool)
  • Transmission fluid temperature (°C/°F) during test

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function scan tool. Read and save all DTCs, freeze frame and live data. Note related transmission codes. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Inspect ATF level and condition. If fluid is low or contaminated, correct level and consider fluid/filter service before further testing.
  3. Visually inspect wiring and connectors to transmission and TCM. Repair any damage or poor connections. Wiggle-test while monitoring PIDs to find intermittent faults.
  4. Check resistance of the 2-3 shift solenoid(s) and compare to spec. Using a diagnostic tool, command the solenoid ON/OFF and observe corresponding changes in pressure/PIDs.
  5. Perform a road test with live data: command a 2→3 shift and observe commanded vs actual gear, solenoid activity, input/output speeds and line pressure. Record behavior and capture logs.
  6. Measure static and dynamic line pressures against manufacturer values. Low or fluctuating pressures indicate pump, friction, or hydraulic leakage problems.
  7. If electrical and pressure checks are good, remove the valve body for inspection: check spool valves, bores and solenoids for sticking, wear or contamination. Replace valve body or solenoids as required.
  8. Inspect clutch packs and drums (may require partial/major transmission disassembly) if mechanical wear or slipping is suspected.
  9. If mechanical and hydraulic components check good, check TCM software level and programming. Reflash or replace TCM per manufacturer guidance.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, perform relearn/adaptive reset procedures if required, and conduct a thorough road test to confirm proper 2→3 shifts.
  11. If problem persists, escalate to full transmission overhaul diagnosis or specialist evaluation.

Likely causes

  • Failed or intermittent 2-3 shift solenoid
  • Clogged filter or contaminated fluid causing valve body sticking
  • Low line pressure from pump or leaks
  • Wiring/connector fault to transmission solenoid or TCM
  • Valve body bore wear or sticking spool valve
  • Worn 2‑3 clutch pack preventing engagement
