Causes

  • Corrupted or out-of-date control module software/calibration
  • Intermittent or failed module hardware (processor, memory)
  • Loss of supply voltage or ground to the module (low battery, poor connection)
  • Communication errors on CAN/LIN/serial networks
  • Poor connector contacts, corrosion, or damaged wiring
  • Incorrect module programming or configuration after replacement

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated or stored fault lamp on
  • One or more drivability issues (reduced performance, limp mode) depending on affected module
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of specific functions controlled by the module
  • Stored additional manufacturer-specific trouble codes or freeze frame data
  • Vehicle may fail certain diagnostic readiness or self-tests

What to check

  • Retrieve the full DTC list and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool that supports manufacturer codes
  • Check for related U- or P-codes (communication and supply codes) in other modules
  • Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system voltage (at-rest and cranking)
  • Visually inspect module connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, water intrusion, or loose pins
  • Check for recent software reflash/recall/service bulletin affecting the module
  • Look for intermittent symptoms and recreate conditions noted in freeze frame (temperature, RPM, load)

Signal parameters

  • Module supply voltage (B+) and ground continuity/resistance
  • Module awake/sleep state and wake-up requests
  • CAN/LIN bus traffic on relevant networks and error counters (bus-off, CRC errors)
  • Communication timeouts/responses from the module (tool queries)
  • Freeze frame parameters: engine RPM, vehicle speed, temperature, voltage at event
  • Module software/part number and calibration ID (vs. expected)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture and save all DTCs and freeze frame data from all control modules using a manufacturer-capable scan tool.
  2. Note any accompanying codes (Uxxxx or Px) that indicate power, ground, or communication problems and address those first.
  3. Verify battery condition and charging system; ensure stable supply voltage during diagnostics (recommended >12.4 V).
  4. Perform a careful visual inspection of the suspect module connector and harness; repair any damaged wiring or poor connections.
  5. Check for proper ground(s) for the module (measure resistance to chassis).
  6. Monitor CAN/LIN bus signals with a capable tool or oscilloscope for noise, missing nodes, or bus-off conditions.
  7. Attempt to communicate with the module repeatedly; note intermittent failures or timeouts.
  8. If communication is stable and software is older or known-issue, compare module part/calibration numbers to service information and reflash/update per manufacturer procedure.
  9. If module fails internal self-tests or remains nonfunctional after software measures, consider replacing the module with correct part and programming per manufacturer instructions.
  10. After repair or reflash, clear codes and perform a test drive or reproduction of fault conditions to confirm resolution; rescan other modules for collateral codes.
  11. If unresolved, consult manufacturer technical service bulletins and dealer-level diagnostic resources or escalate to manufacturer support.

Likely causes

  • Module software corruption or need for reflash/update
  • Intermittent power/ground or low battery condition
  • Communication fault on the vehicle network (CAN/LIN) affecting the module
  • Damaged connector or wiring to the control module
  • Hardware failure inside the control module
