Causes
- Faulty throttle body drive motor
- Open/shorted wiring or poor connector at throttle actuator
- Poor or intermittent ground or supply voltage to motor
- Carbon build-up or mechanical binding on throttle plate
- Faulty throttle position sensor or sensor signal correlation error
- Faulty ECM or internal driver electronics
Symptoms
- Check Engine MIL illuminated
- Reduced engine power / limp-home mode
- Poor or delayed throttle response, hesitation
- Engine may idle rough, surge or stall
- Throttle may be stuck closed or open during diagnostics
- Code returns immediately after clearing or intermittently
What to check
- Read freeze frame and freeze-frame data with a scan tool; note conditions when code set
- Scan live data: commanded throttle angle vs actual throttle position
- Check for additional related DTCs (TPS, pedal position, supply voltage, grounds)
- Inspect wiring harness and connector at throttle body for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion
- Measure battery voltage and ground integrity under load
- Measure resistance and continuity of actuator motor circuits per manufacturer specs
Signal parameters
- Commanded Throttle Position (degrees or %)
- Actual Throttle Position (sensor reading, degrees or %)
- Actuator Command (PWM duty cycle or commanded voltage)
- Actuator Supply Voltage (battery/ignition source)
- Actuator Ground continuity
- Actuator Motor Current (amps) or motor driver feedback
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect an OBD-II scan tool and record freeze frame and live data while reproducing the fault if possible. Note commanded vs actual throttle position and related codes.
- Verify battery voltage is within specification (key on and engine running). Recharge or replace battery if low.
- Visually inspect the throttle body connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, pin pushing, or water entry. Repair any damage and secure connections.
- With key ON (engine off) backprobe motor power and ground pins at the throttle actuator connector. Confirm proper supply voltage and ground continuity. Wiggle wiring to check for intermittent faults.
- Measure actuator motor coil resistance per service spec. Infinite/open or short to ground/rail indicates motor or harness fault.
- Using a scope or a voltmeter (if applicable), monitor actuator command signal (PWM or varying voltage) while commanding throttle via scan tool. Verify motor responds and current draw is within expected range. Excessive current indicates mechanical binding or short.
- Inspect and clean throttle plate and bore if carbon buildup is present; ensure free movement. Re-install and perform throttle relearn / adaptation procedure.
- Clear codes and test drive. If code returns, isolate between harness and actuator by substituting a known-good throttle body (if available) or by repairing wiring. If wiring and actuator test good, suspect ECM driver fault and consider module testing or replacement as last resort.
- After repair, perform required relearn/calibration and recheck for stored codes and correct operation.
Likely causes
- Corroded, damaged or loose connector/wiring to the throttle actuator
- Throttle body motor failure (internal short, high resistance, or stuck)
- Excessive carbon buildup restricting throttle plate movement
- Low battery voltage or poor ground affecting motor drive
- ECM driver fault (less common)
Fault status
Status
Throttle actuator control motor circuit out of range/performance — engine may enter reduced power mode. Check throttle actuator, wiring, and perform relearn.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 1.0-3.0 hours
