Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in EGR throttle control circuit
  • Corroded or loose connector at EGR throttle actuator
  • Failed EGR throttle actuator (motor/servo) or internal position sensor
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the actuator
  • Poor ground at actuator or chassis ground
  • ECM/PCM fault or internal driver failure

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL/CEL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine power or limp mode
  • Rough idle, stalling, or hesitation
  • Poor idle stability or surging
  • Failed emissions test or increased NOx emissions
  • EGR-related drivability faults such as pinging/knock under load

What to check

  • Read freeze frame data and live PIDs (EGR throttle position, commanded position, battery voltage)
  • Visual inspection of wiring, connectors, and harness routing to EGR throttle actuator for damage or corrosion
  • Check for related DTCs (EGR, throttle body, powertrain) that could provide context
  • Measure supply voltage to actuator connector with key ON (should be ~11–14 V where applicable)
  • Verify ground integrity at actuator and chassis ground
  • Backprobe position sensor signal and compare actual vs commanded position

Signal parameters

  • Actuator supply voltage (battery feed): typically ~11–14 V with key ON
  • Position sensor output: typical range ~0.5–4.5 V (varies by design); should change smoothly with actuator movement
  • Command signal: PWM duty or control command from ECM (0–100% duty cycle) or voltage command depending on design
  • Expected continuity: no open between supply and actuator; low resistance to ground where applicable
  • Reference frequency (if PWM): manufacturer-specific, often tens to a few hundred Hz

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a scan tool to record DTCs, freeze frame, and live data for EGR throttle position vs commanded position. Note battery voltage and any related faults.
  2. Perform a thorough visual inspection of the EGR throttle actuator, connector, and harness for damage, corrosion, or signs of overheating. Repair as needed.
  3. Check fuses/relays for the EGR/throttle circuit. Replace any blown fuse and test relay operation.
  4. With connector connected, monitor the actuator supply and signal on a lab scope or multimeter while commanding the EGR throttle through the scan tool. Verify supply voltage and that the ECM is issuing a control signal.
  5. Backprobe the actuator connector: verify supply (battery), ground, and position feedback. Look for open circuits (infinite resistance) or shorts to ground/voltage.
  6. Perform resistance/continuity checks on the wiring between the actuator and ECM; repair any opens or shorts. Check grounds for low resistance to chassis.
  7. If wiring and power/ground are correct but the position feedback does not change when commanded, replace the EGR throttle actuator. Re-test after replacement.
  8. If actuator replacement does not clear the issue and wiring is confirmed good, consider ECM driver fault — confirm with manufacturer OEM diagnostic procedures before replacing ECM.
  9. After repairs, clear DTCs and perform a road/functional test and re-scan to ensure code does not return. If code returns, escalate to manufacturer-specific diagnostics or software reflash.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector pins or water intrusion at actuator connector
  • Broken or chafed wire causing open circuit or intermittent low voltage
  • Faulty EGR throttle actuator (common on higher-mileage units)
  • Missing or poor ground at actuator
  • Blown inline fuse or bad relay in the supply circuit
