Causes

  • Faulty inclination/tilt sensor (bank 2)
  • Poor electrical connection: damaged connector, corrosion, broken wires or pin damage
  • Short to voltage or short to ground in the sensor signal or supply circuit
  • Incorrect sensor mounting, physically knocked out of position or loose bracket
  • Failed or out‑of‑date software/calibration requiring sensor reinitialization or module reflash
  • Intermittent supply voltage (battery/charging system issues) affecting sensor operation

Symptoms

  • Warning message or lamp related to stability, off-road systems, or vehicle inclination
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of certain off-road or stability functions
  • Possible adaptive suspension/ride-height faults or abnormal ride behavior
  • Diagnostic trouble code stored (P2179) and possibly related history codes
  • System may operate in a degraded/fail-safe mode

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data from related control modules (ABS, suspension, body control, engine)
  • Verify vehicle software level and recent fault history; check for technical service bulletins (TSBs)
  • Inspect the physical location of the inclination/tilt sensor(s) on Bank 2 for damage or misalignment
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, pin push-out or water ingress
  • Check battery and charging system voltage stability (12–14.5 V with engine running)
  • Use a diagnostic tool to view live inclination/tilt sensor values and compare with expected ranges or Bank 1

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor supply: 5 V reference (verify with manufacturer-specific data)
  • Signal output: usually a varying voltage proportional to angle (example nominal range 0.5–4.5 V) — confirm with OEM spec
  • Signal update rate: real-time angle updates (check live data frequency with scan tool)
  • Expected idle/level value: near mid-scale when vehicle on level ground (compare Bank 1)
  • Diagnostic trouble thresholds: sensor value out of allowable range or implausible compared with other sensors

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool. Record P2179 and any additional codes, freeze frame and live inclination sensor data.
  2. Confirm the fault is current by clearing codes and performing the conditions that re-create the fault (if safe).
  3. Visually inspect the Bank 2 inclination sensor and mounting for damage, loose fasteners or contamination. Repair or secure as needed.
  4. Inspect and back-probe connector pins: verify reference voltage (typically 5 V), ground continuity and signal voltage with the vehicle level. Compare to Bank 1 sensor readings.
  5. Wiggle wiring and connector while watching live data to identify intermittent opens/shorts. Repair damaged wiring or replace connector.
  6. If wiring and connectors test good, follow manufacturer guidance to perform sensor self-test/calibration or forced relearn/reinitialization of the suspension/inclination system.
  7. If sensor still reports out-of-range or inconsistent values, replace the Bank 2 inclination sensor with a genuine/OEM-approved unit.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform required initialization/calibration procedures per service manual. Road test and re-check live data and DTC status.
  9. If code returns despite correct sensor and wiring, inspect and test related control modules; consider reprogramming or replacement only after verifying communications and inputs.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or loose connector at the inclination sensor
  • Broken or chafed wiring harness to the sensor on Bank 2
  • Failed inclination sensor hardware (internal electronics)
  • Sensor not calibrated after suspension or ride-height work
  • Module software bug or invalid sensor parameter stored in control module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Excessive inclination system — Bank 2. Stability/off‑road functions may be limited. Inspect inclination sensor and wiring.
