Fuel Mode Select Switch Performance

Causes

  • Faulty fuel mode select switch (mechanical or electrical)
  • Damaged, corroded or loose connector at the switch
  • Open, shorted or damaged wiring between switch and ECM/BCM
  • Poor ground or supply voltage to switch circuit
  • Intermittent or lost communication on vehicle network (CAN) carrying mode status
  • Blown fuse or power supply issue to switch circuit

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)/Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Selected fuel/mode does not change or is ignored
  • Instrument cluster or message center shows incorrect fuel mode or a warning
  • Vehicle may revert to a default fuel/mode or limp behavior
  • Intermittent or inconsistent response when the switch is operated

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all related DTCs and pending codes
  • Inspect fuel mode select switch physically for damage, corrosion, and secure mounting
  • Inspect connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion
  • Check related fuses and power/ground circuits
  • Use a scan tool to monitor live data: switch status, commanded mode, and any communication errors on CAN
  • Verify whether other modules report the same mode (cluster, BCM) to determine communication vs local fault

Signal parameters

  • Switch closed (typical contact type): continuity/low resistance (
  • Switch open (contact type): open circuit (OL) when released
  • Voltage-type switch: ~0–5 V signal at ECM input (0 V = one state, ~5 V = other state) or battery-level switched signal (~0 V / ~12 V) depending on vehicle design
  • Supply voltage to switch: ignition-switched 12 V (approx. 11–14 V) with key ON
  • Ground reference: near 0 V (less than 0.5 V) at proper chassis ground
  • CAN/serial: fuel mode bit toggles in module data when switch is operated (scan tool live data)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve code P25A5 and any related codes. Record freeze frame data and the reported input state when the fault set.
  2. Visually inspect the switch, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or contamination. Repair obvious damage.
  3. With ignition ON, use a scan tool and operate the fuel mode switch. Observe live data: does the switch state change in the scanner and in other modules (cluster/BCM)? If yes, suspect downstream module behavior.
  4. Backprobe the switch connector. Verify supply voltage (with key ON), signal voltage, and ground reference while operating the switch. Compare to expected signal_params.
  5. If supply/ground absent or wrong, trace and repair power/ground circuits, check fuses/relays.
  6. If supply and ground are good but signal does not change or is out of range, measure continuity inside switch (or resistance across terminals) with switch operated. Replace switch if contact failure observed.
  7. If switch signals appear correct at the connector but the ECM does not recognize changes, test continuity between the switch connector and ECM input pins. Repair any opens/shorts.
  8. Check for CAN/communication errors if mode status is transmitted over network. Diagnose communication faults before replacing modules.
  9. If wiring and switch are confirmed good and communication is normal, consider ECM/BCM software or internal fault. Consult manufacturer service info for reflash or module replacement procedures.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform functional test and a road test to confirm the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at switch
  • Failed switch contacts or internal switch failure
  • Open/short in harness between switch and ECU
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground to switch circuit
