Causes

  • Blown fuse or faulty fuse link for the indicator circuit
  • Burned-out or shorted indicator bulb/LED assembly
  • Damaged wiring (short to ground, high resistance, or open) between the module and lamp
  • Corroded or loose connector at lamp or module
  • Faulty lamp socket or internal lamp driver hardware
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to lamp assembly or harness

Symptoms

  • Fuel Mode Indicator lamp does not illuminate when commanded
  • Lamp is dim, flickering or intermittently working
  • Related dashboard indicator behavior may be abnormal
  • Possible diagnostic trouble codes stored for lamp/circuit faults

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame, current and pending codes with a scan tool and note lamp command status
  • Visually inspect lamp assembly, lens, socket and wiring for corrosion, damage or water intrusion
  • Check relevant fuses and fusible links
  • Backprobe the lamp connector with ignition ON and with the lamp commanded ON/FLASH to observe voltage
  • Perform wiggle test on harness and connectors while observing lamp and scan data
  • Disconnect lamp assembly; see if code clears and module reports normal output (isolates lamp vs module)

Signal parameters

  • When lamp is commanded ON (high-side driver): ~11–13 V at lamp feed expected
  • When lamp is commanded OFF: ~0 V (floating) or battery voltage depending on driver type
  • When lamp is driven by low-side (ground) driver: ON ≈ 0–0.5 V on control conductor, OFF ≈ battery voltage (~11–13 V)
  • Typical LED driver circuits may use PWM; frequency often in the 50–500 Hz range (varies by manufacturer)
  • Continuity/resistance of lamp assembly: near 0 Ω to a few ohms for incandescent, higher/complex for LED modules

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, read and record P26E2 and any related codes; note lamp command during freeze frame data.
  2. Inspect fuses, fusible links and relays for the lamp and related lighting circuits; replace if blown and retest.
  3. Visually inspect lamp, socket and wiring; repair any damaged insulation, terminals or connectors.
  4. Backprobe the lamp connector with a digital multimeter. With ignition ON and lamp commanded ON, verify expected voltage per vehicle architecture (see signal_params).
  5. If voltage is low or stuck: disconnect the lamp assembly. If the output changes to expected (or code clears), suspect lamp assembly/short. If output remains low, suspect module/driver or short upstream.
  6. Perform continuity and resistance checks between module connector and lamp connector; repair any opens/high resistance.
  7. If short suspected, isolate sections of harness, disconnect connectors and test until fault location is found. Repair wiring or replace the lamp assembly as required.
  8. If wiring and lamp check OK, test the controlling module output with a scope to verify waveform and driver behavior. Replace module only after exhausting wiring and lamp checks.
  9. Clear codes and perform verification drive or function test. Monitor for return of the fault and re-check all repairs if fault returns.

  • Open or high-resistance connection at lamp connector or in harness
  • Short to ground in the lamp feed or control conductor
  • Failed indicator lamp (LED module)
  • Failed output driver in BCM/instrument cluster
