Causes

  • Faulty Battery Interface Control Module B (internal electronics or firmware)
  • Loss or intermittent 12 V supply or ground to the module
  • HV pack supply or measurement circuit fault (voltage/current sensor)
  • CAN/LIN communication errors or bus wiring faults
  • Poor connector pins, corrosion or water ingress at the module or harness
  • High resistance in contactors, pre-charge or HV cables

Symptoms

  • Hybrid/EV MIL (warning lamp) illuminated
  • Reduced engine/electric drive performance or restricted mode (limp mode)
  • Inability to enter EV drive mode or charge the HV battery
  • Battery pack balancing or charging disabled
  • Inaccurate battery state-of-charge or pack voltage readings on scan tool
  • Related modules report communication or secondary battery faults

What to check

  • Read and record DTCs and freeze frame data with a dealer-level or equivalent scan tool
  • Check for additional codes affecting HV battery, contactors, or communications
  • Visually inspect module B, connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, water intrusion or loose pins
  • Verify presence and stability of 12 V supply and ground at module B (11–14 V typical)
  • Confirm HV battery pack voltage is within vehicle-expected range before further testing (use appropriate PPE)
  • Check CAN/LIN bus activity and message counts for module B with scan tool

Signal parameters

  • 12 V auxiliary supply to module B: ~11–14 V when key on
  • Module B ground: near 0 V, low resistance to chassis
  • HV battery pack voltage: vehicle-specific (example ranges 200–800 V depending on model) — should be steady and within expected value for SOC
  • CAN bus traffic: module B should transmit/receive expected messages; scan tool should show present/active
  • Battery current sensor/shunt values: within expected range for vehicle operating condition
  • Module temperature sensor: within expected ambient/operating range and consistent with other modules

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool, record all DTCs and freeze frame data, then check for related codes.
  2. Verify the fault is current: clear the codes and attempt to re-create the condition while monitoring live data.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of module B and associated wiring/connectors for damage, corrosion or moisture.
  4. With key on (but HV disabled per manufacturer procedure), measure 12 V supply and ground at module B; repair any supply/ground issues.
  5. Check CAN/LIN communication: confirm module B appears on the bus, see message IDs and error counters. Repair wiring or terminators if bus faults are present.
  6. Confirm HV pack voltage and isolation are within safe limits before any HV probing. Only qualified technicians should work on HV circuits.
  7. Verify continuity of sensor/shunt wiring and contactor control circuits between the HV battery and module B.
  8. If wiring, supplies and communications are good, review software/firmware level and apply manufacturer updates or reflash if available.
  9. If module B still fails after the above, consider module replacement following manufacturer procedures and perform post-repair calibration and verification.
  10. After repairs, clear DTCs and confirm normal operation across a range of driving/charging conditions.

Likely causes

  • 12 V power or ground missing/unstable at module B
  • CAN communication lost or intermittent between module B and ECU
  • Sensor or shunt wiring to module B open/shorted
  • Module B internal failure (electronics or firmware)
  • Contaminated/loose connector at module B
