Causes

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and full DTC list with a capable scan tool; record active and history codes
  • Verify ignition state and attempt to wake the network (cycle key, operate a control to wake module)
  • Visually inspect seat connectors, wiring harness, and junctions for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion
  • Check fuses and relays that supply power to the seat module(s)
  • Backprobe the seat module connector(s): verify battery voltage on supply pins and near 0V on ground pins
  • Measure CAN or LIN bus voltages at the seat module connector with key ON (see signal params)

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus (if used): Idle/recessive voltage ~2.5 V on both CAN_H and CAN_L; dominant state: CAN_H rises (~3.5–4.0 V) and CAN_L falls (~1.0–1.5 V); typical differential when dominant ~2 V
  • CAN bus bit rates commonly 500 kbps or 250 kbps depending on vehicle network
  • LIN bus (if used): idle at battery voltage (pulled high), dominant pulled to ~0 V; typical LIN baud ~10.4 kbps
  • Module supply pin: B+ ≈ battery voltage (12 V nominal, 13–14 V with engine running)
  • Module ground pin: ≈ 0 V (low millivolts under load)
  • Termination resistance for high-speed CAN: approx. 60 Ω measured across CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and read all codes. Note whether U0246 is current or history and if other U-codes are present.
  2. Attempt to communicate directly with Seat Control Module E. If no response, confirm other modules on same bus are communicating.
  3. Verify power and ground at the seat module connector with key ON. Repair any blown fuse, open power, or poor ground before further testing.
  4. Visually inspect and gently flex the seat harness and connector while monitoring for communication to find intermittent faults.
  5. Measure CAN_H and CAN_L (or LIN) at the module while a known-good module or scanner is communicating on the bus. Look for idle voltages and data transitions. If the bus is silent, check upstream wiring and gateway.
  6. Check termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L with power off (≈60 Ω). If open or shorted, isolate and repair wiring harness or replace faulty terminator.
  7. If power/ground and bus signals are good at the connector but the module does not respond, try waking or cycling the module (battery disconnect or ignition cycles may be required) and check for available software updates or TSBs.
  8. If available, swap with a known-good seat control module (or bench test the suspect module) if allowed by manufacturer procedures to confirm module failure.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform functional tests of seat functions and re-scan to confirm U0246 does not return. If reprogramming is required, follow OEM procedures.
