Causes
- Open or shorted wiring between IMR sensor and engine control module (ECM/PCM)
- Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the IMR sensor or at the ECM/PCM
- Failed IMR position sensor or actuator
- Blown fuse or missing power/ground to the sensor or its local control module
- Faulty ECM/PCM or intermediary control module on the communication bus
- Intermittent network bus fault (CAN or LIN) or bus termination/power issue
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light (MIL) on
- Reduced engine performance, hesitation or poor drivability under some conditions
- Intake runner control may be stuck open or closed (loss of variable intake benefit)
- Stored or pending U064F and possibly related U0xxx communication codes
- Intermittent faults that appear/disappear with vibrations or harness movement
What to check
- Read and record all stored and pending codes (all modules) and freeze frame data with a scan tool
- Verify whether the IMR sensor provides live data (position values) via scan tool
- Perform a visual inspection of intake runner harness, connectors and nearby components for damage, corrosion, or pinched wires
- Check relevant fuses and relays for power to the IMR sensor circuit(s)
- Backprobe the IMR sensor connector (with ignition on, engine off) to verify reference voltage, signal voltage and ground presence
- Check continuity and resistance between the sensor connector and the ECM/PCM pins with ignition off
Signal parameters
- Typical position sensor reference: 5.0 V supply (check service manual for exact value)
- Typical position signal output: roughly 0.5 V (closed) to 4.5 V (open) for analog potentiometer-style sensors — actual range depends on manufacturer
- Ground: near 0 V
- If sensor communicates over LIN: single-wire serial line with recessive/idle high and dominant low pulses (check vehicle-specific bus type)
- If data sent via CAN: CAN high/low differential idle approx. 2.5 V each (verify using service data)
- Expected sensor resistance (if applicable): often in the low kiloohm range — consult OEM specs
Diagnostic algorithm
- Use a capable scan tool to read U064F and any related codes from all modules. Note freeze frame and module reporting errors.
- Confirm whether the IMR position value is present and plausible in live data. If no data is present, proceed.
- Visually inspect the IMR sensor connector and harness on Bank 1. Look for corrosion, bent pins, damaged insulation or recent repair splices.
- With ignition ON (engine OFF) backprobe the sensor connector: verify 5 V reference (or vehicle-specific ref), signal voltage and ground. Record values.
- If reference or ground is missing, trace and repair the power/ground source (check fuses, relays, and ground straps).
- If reference and ground are good but signal is absent or fixed, perform continuity/resistance checks between the sensor signal pin and the ECM/PCM pin with ignition OFF. Repair any opens/shorts.
- Wiggle the harness and connectors while monitoring live data to find intermittent connections. Repair or secure any failing connectors or chafed wiring.
- If wiring tests pass, consider swapping or bench-testing the IMR sensor (or replace with known-good unit) and re-check communication.
- If the sensor and wiring test good, check the communication bus (LIN/CAN) integrity: measure bus voltages and look for other module errors that could indicate a bus node problem. Repair bus faults or replace a faulty module as indicated by further tests.
- After repairs, clear codes, perform a relearn or initialization if required by the manufacturer, then verify repair with a road test and confirm the code does not return.
Likely causes
- Disconnected or poorly seated connector at the IMR sensor
- Damaged wiring harness (chafe, pinch, rodent damage) causing open or short
- Contaminated/corroded terminals causing intermittent contact
- Failed IMR sensor (internal electronics or position potentiometer/Hall element)
- Faulty module (ECM/PCM) or failure in an intermediate module that relays the message
- Shared power/ground/fuse fault affecting the sensor and related circuits
Fault status
Status
Lost communication with Intake Manifold Runner Position sensor (Bank 1). The control module did not receive expected position data or a valid message from the IMR sensor; an intermittent or permanent network/wiring or sensor fault was detected and a U064F code was set.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
